Next up is a decidedly darker and interesting take on Felicia Hardy by Robert Schilling, winner of December's Angel Contest:

"One thing that has always irked me about comic book women is the way they're portrayed. Some, like Black Cat, have pretty compelling stories, but are dressed as eye candy for adolescent boys. I wanted to make Black Cat something dark and realistic, reflecting her horrifying past and psychological conflict with herself.
"I have her not necessarily dressing up as a villain, but as a persona she created out of anger and shame of being a victim of rape. She wears a wig and dark clothing to conceal her identity as she follows in her father's footsteps in theft."
Next up, three Superhero of the Month newcomers. Welcome!

"This was really tricky for me as I think the original suit is pretty cool. To me, the Black Cat has always been this interesting, sometimes awkward mix of prissiness and raw sexuality-- kind of an ongoing good girl/bad girl conflict that manifests itself in both Felicia's appearance and behaviour. I think this is one character where a bit of cheescake is definitely called for-- there is definitely an element of sexual thrill that Felicia gets from what she does. I also didn't want to overdo the cat elements-- she's a cat burglar, she doesn't need to wear cat ears and have catch lines like 'mrrrrow' and 'purrrrfect'. That said, without the fur its just not the Black Cat."
Thanks Ernest, Stanley, and Josh for your fantastic entries!
Finally, we have another SHotM regular, the always-awesome Kevin Prieto:
"When I was just a tiny little maggot, my brother received Maximum Carnage for the Sega Genesis as a birthday gift. It was one of those games that was full of characters you wish they'd have in the cartoons because they were usually much cooler than those jerks Kraven or Hobgoblin. One of which was the super sexyness, Black Cat. I always loved this character, she was just a lot of fun. How could you not like a chick that gives the hero a run for his money in everything he does best? That's not just cool. That's shades."
Thanks Ernest, Stanley, and Josh for your fantastic entries!

Well, what do you all think? I think these are a fantastic way to kick off 2011! Be sure to check out our Official Contest Announcement for details on this month's Black Cat Contest, as well as our Sponsor Spotlight for information on Dan's Comics and the prize they are offering for this month's winner!

Wow, Robert Schilling is knocking these out of the park.
ReplyDeleteNice, really like all three. Warren's really does give it a more timeless look, almost would fit into the silver age Spider-Man rogue's gallery. The other two are really cool for different reasons, both take the character down a darker path than what is usually associated with her.
ReplyDeleteCool stuff. Really like Warren's take-- would be cool to see it in the current books as drawn by Marcos Martin!
ReplyDeleteI have to say that I really like the competition so far. And I love the belt buckle on Ernest's submission.
ReplyDeleteThere is a thread over on the CBR forums in the Artist and Writers Showcase regarding this site. If you're a fan here, let people over there know that you are. :)

Accidentally made this post disappear while updating it. D'oh! I'm glad everything came back!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the notice on the CBR post, Warren!
So far this contest is off to a great start. The standard keeps getting set higher and higher...
This is going to be a hard decision, I can tell already. We are just getting started and I already see a number that I like :)
ReplyDeleteSeriously!
ReplyDeleteGowdy's is hot. The others don't really remind me of Felicia.
ReplyDeleteWhat about them doesn't remind you of Felicia?
ReplyDeleteWell, I don't want to pick on anyone as these are great designs. My general critique would be that her portrayal in the comics isn't really dark & moody, but the amount of skin on some of these is a little cheesecake. It's a hard balance and I think Gowdy got closest to finding it. I like the Spiderman zipper too, although to be fair the high heels are a bit impractical. I gravitate towards simplicity.
ReplyDeleteI understand. I think there are things to love in each redesign so far. I've been excited to see them in the SHotM inbox.
ReplyDeleteI've not read a ton of Black Cat stories, but from what I have she's never seemed dark and moody, although considering her past, that's a way she could be portrayed, I suppose. I do think she's been a bit more "cheesecake" in the past, though. I think it was the early '90's when her neckline plunged to below her navel. She's always shown some cleavage, but that's been amped even today, including in the Ultimate line.
I LOVED the Spidey zipper in Gowdy's submission. Very subtle, but very clever. But again, I think there's something to love in all of these.
I actually completely missed the Spider-man zipper on Gowdy's, that is pretty clever.
ReplyDeletewow! great entries from everyone, I'm loving josh Gowdy's take. seriously, great art and fashionable.
ReplyDeleteWarren Newsom: I like this quite abit. A different direction of redesigining: going retro. Somehow captures Adam West's Batman era's Catwoman.
ReplyDeleteRobert Schilling: Dark gothic blackcat! Grim. Somehow reminded me of Birds of Prey Drama's Canary.
Ernest Quek: An oriental Blackcat! I can see Lucy Liu in the costume. Ouch! Hairpin as weapons gonna hurt real bad.
Stanley Wong: A very 80's looking Blackcat. Big shoulder pad and big funky hairdo. Interesting.
Josh Gowdy: Very subtle but effective. If its not for the comments I would have missed the spidy zipper haha Nice touch.
Kevin Prieto: I like the huge bell you gave you Blackcat. Somewhat anime inspired.
This time round the Alex and the panel of judges is REALLY gonna have a hard time choosing. All entries are so distinctively different.
