A couple of regular contestants give us their takes on Harley Quinn:
"For Harley's redesign I wanted to give her a more realistic, grim look without totally diving into the Nolan-verse. I like the idea of her being an acrobat of sorts, using her reflexes and agility against opponents instead of relying on gadgets and such like The Joker. Being a psychiatrist, she has to spend her days acting cool and collected behind a desk. But when she puts on her mask, she's able to release her child-like raw emotion and liberate herself from the daunting tasks she used to practice. She plays dress up to escape the grim world around her and her ignorance becomes the source of all her irrational actions."
*Editor's Note: SHotM is a self-proclaimed "relatively family-friendly" site. We're dealing with superheroes, so there are bound to be darker themes from time to time. However, I've had to reject a couple of pieces on grounds of nudity/sexuality. While Robert's amazing piece certainly doesn't fit that criteria, some may find Harley's "gesture" offensive. I certainly never want to censor anyone, but I also don't want to receive angry parent e-mails. So, if you want to see Robert's piece "unfiltered", click here.

"I'm not particularly fond of Harley Quinn, but as a childhood of fan of the the Batman animated series I knew all I needed to know about the character to tackle this redesign. Any woman sick enough to consider herself the Joker's girlfriend would have to be more than a bit off. While there's definitely a bit of a sex thing going on, I didn't want to make her 'sexy'. She a sick sado-masochistic clown, a female J. Wayne Gacy. She cuts herself."

I like Ross's Harley. The baggy pants are a very nice touch. And I'm always a fan of dark and gritty.
ReplyDeleteAlex, I love the smiley face you used to censor my Harley, haha. Best censoring image ever!
Robert - I'm glad you liked that! I hoped everything would be okay with that, especially since there's a link provided to view the full image.
ReplyDeleteThat said, both pieces are amazing. Both reflect the dark, gritty side of Harley that I think would fit perfectly in the Arkham game universe and should be explored more in the comics. I agree about Ross's Harley, the baggy pants are a nice touch.
I also like the use of the mask in yours. It kind of reminds me of the Alicia character in '89. Don't know if that's intentional or not, but it's a clever, subtle touch. Very nice.
Shilling's Quinn is super creepy. Nice!
