Superhero of the Month - Ally Cat's Atom Eve

Congratulations Ally Cat, winner of April's Atom Eve contest sponsored by Big Shiny Robot!

Ally Cat - 25/30
As the winner of this month's contest, Ally wins the two copies of Invincible signed by artist Ryan Ottley that Big Shiny Robot! offered, and has the option to guest-judge next month's contest.

Judging for this month was done by Alex (for SHotM), Lucas (representing Big Shiny Robot!), and last month's winner, Caanan Grall. We scored entires out of 30 (10 points per judge). Ally's rated 25/30.

Alex: The abundant use of white really makes this. The pink jumps out and really accentuates the costume. Like with the other submissions, I love the high boots; regardless of how impractical the heels are, I love them. And I like how the symbol was tweaked to include the female symbol, whole still retaining that atom identity. The only thing that doesn't entirely work for me are the holes in the elbows. I can buy them on the feet, but the elbows don't do it for me. Other than that, fantastic redesign.

Lucas: I dig the funky nature of Ally's piece. The pose and the color scheme are awesome, they work well with the style. If anything, I'd just love to see Invincible drawn in this same style interacting with Eve.
Caanan: I love that this looks more like a Super Science Action Hero outfit than the rest. I like the bands that accentuate the curves in the right places, and I like the white. White is all the RAGE these days, huh, Spider-Man?

Check out the Runners-Up after the jump!

Dimitrios Kasdaglas - 24/30
Lucas: I really liked this one a lot. The coloring on it is great. The only thing that didn't work 100% for me was the apple "logo" on her belly, but I appreciated the effort to try something new.

Caanan: I don't like the apple. It looks like a clip art onesy from Cafepress. And yeah, I get the reference to Eve and the apple, but is she daring guys to take a bite out of her stomach? Why not just have an image of a loaf of bread. It is on her bread basket, after all.

I'm ranting. Sorry. Take that away and this would be perfect. I love the short hair look, and the shiny quality to the outfit. Eve's costume comes out of NOWHERE. She can make her costume out of whatever she pleases and this at least looks like that.

Alex: This one was honestly the hardest one for me. As you can see, there's only a 1-point difference between Dimitri's and Ally's. I love the overall costume change. The darker theme sets it apart from the rest, and I think it suits the character well. Like Lucas said, I appreciated the use of the apple as an attempt to do something new with the character, and I think it still could work in some form -- just not as the primary logo. The problem for me  is that if I didn't know this was Atom Eve, I don't think I'd pick up on it right away. I think some kind of incorporation or variation of the traditional logo would immediately sell this as Atom Eve.

Michelle Sciuto - 21/30
Lucas: Michelle's version is a lot of fun. The brown isn't really working for me, maybe a lighter shade?

Alex: Pink and brown are not two colors I would normally put together, but here -- for me -- they totally work. I like the sheer fabric that subs as a cape, something else that wasn't done by another artist. I love the boots, but I wish they were either shorter, or her leggings were longer; the skin break-up doesn't work 100% for me. Still though, one of my favorites.

Caanan: Kudos for hot pants instead of a skirt. Why is everyone always with the skirts? This isn't tennis. This is Punching Bad Guys. That said, I don't know what the lace -- butt cape? -- is for. This looks kinda like Eve by way of Disney's Aladdin, but the pale colour does break the design up a bit, so I dunno... maybe a spiffy belt in the same colour? Something more practical, anyway.

Kevin Prieto - 21/30

Caanan: I like that this suit looks shiny and, er...globulous; like it's an alien material -- much like they're going for in the Green Lantern movie. This is CGI Eve, as it should be, since I mentioned earlier how Eve makes her costume out of thin air. It should be like, "Wow. Your suit looks like electric pink soup... Awwwwwesome... Lemme touch it."

Alex: I love the gloves. Love. Them. They're really unique and I can imagine they'd lend a lot of fluidity when drawing her in motion. Like with Michelle's piece, I love the boots, but I wish the leggings were longer. But it's a tiny thing. Also, I really enjoy the long hair; I think it would aid the feeling of motion we'd otherwise lack without her cape.

Lucas: The coloring on Kevin's is well done, especially on Eve's powers. The only critique I have is a bigger upstairs to go with the downstairs.

Craig Payne - 20/30
Alex: Black and pink are a perfect combination that I'm surprised weren't utilized more in this contest. Although it kind of has a Tron-like vibe, I like the pink accents; they really help to break up all that black. I don't have a problem with the leggings here, since Eve's skirt would move around, but the kneecap symbols are a distraction for me. It's minor, though. I love the design.

Caanan: Female kneecaps! I feel at this point we should put a female symbol also on her elbows, soles, each knuckle and a big old GIANT one in the middle of her forehead, just so no matter what she's hitting you with, you know you're being hit by a GIRL. *Sigh.*

Not a knock on the design - pink and black is an awesome combo, and I like the form-defining contour lines, it's just silly that it's even there for the character at all.

Lucas: The new color scheme Craig came up with works well, same with the cape and skirt. If he could've integrated the powers into this it would've been great.

Editor's Note: That's it! Thanks to everyone who participated! Really. Like all the contests, this one was hard to judge -- every entry was well-thought out and exceptionally illustrated. I hope that you all enjoyed this contest, and I hope you'll consider participating in May's X-23 contest.

I'd also especially like to thank Big Shiny Robot! for their sponsorship of this month's contest. BSR! has been great to SHotM from day one, and have featured us on their page several times, even prior to sponsoring this contest. Thanks to Lucas for helping judge, and all of the BSR! crew for their support! You guys are great!

  2. Oh! YAY! Thanks guys! I am totally honored! Your crits are pretty solid, and I really appreciate that.
I think EVERYONE did a really great job, too! So many submissions! So many different views and inspired ideas. I hope every single one of you find the inspiration to submit next month for my personal FAVORITE mutant, X23!

Alex: Who needs functional shoes when you can fly?! Also, I feel you on the elbow holes. Elbow Pads would have been more useful.
Lucas: I think you're onto something there. I might just have to do a little invincible + redesigned Atom Eve something! Just for you guys.
Caanan: The Viltrumites totally had a thing for white. BTW, totally ADORED your piece last month! Thanks for your input! :D

And I too, really dig this new voting system. I recently entered a contest that had some uncleare rules to voting, and I really like how you decided to go with a jury, but let the fans leave positive feedback and useful critiques that you can bring to the table while deliberating over the submissions.

  3. Ally - Good call on the shoes/flying deal. Actually, I really liked them. Plus, I imagine they'd be useful for kicking bad guys in the face. :)

Also, thanks for all the kind word towards SHotM, they are greatly appreciated.

Robert - Thanks! I think the judging actually went a lot smoother this time. We had a lot more time to narrow things down, so it wasn't such a rush. I still want to include fan polls in some way here and there, but overall, I'm pretty pleased with how this new system works.
