OFFICIAL CONTEST ANNOUNCEMENT - WONDER WOMAN

Art by Terry Dodson
When I set out to finalize the calendar for the year, I was banking on the new Wonder Woman TV pilot getting picked up. Clearly that didn't happen, but looking at the design they came up with (not to mention her new comic look), I thought, "Forget it! We're going with it anyways!" Because really, Diana of Themyscira just can't get a fair shake when it comes to official costume redesigns.

The look she sports to the left is iconic, but she had it forever. And let's face it: attempts at updating her have been less than stellar. (Can't she get some pants that don't look shiny? Or otherwise look ridiculous?) It's time for Wonder Woman to get some wonderful new threads.

That's where you come in.

Superhero of the Month and Girls Read Comics are proud to present August's Wonder Woman Redesign Contest

Submissions are due between August 1 and August 24. (An official due-by time is TBA.) As always, submissions will be posted throughout the month.

This month's contest will be judged by the SHotM crew, our friends over at Girls Read Comics, and the winner of last month's War Machine contest. That's a lot of people to impress, but we know you're up to the task. So get ready, get those pencils sharpened, and redesign Wonder Woman!

Check out Wonder Woman's less-than-popular redesigns after the jump!

  1. I'm pretty sure the DCnU revamp put her back in panties (as seen in a recent preview). The DCnU outfit seems to backtracking on her most recent revamp, without going back to the original costume. The result ends up more like "change for change's sake" with no clear vision nor purpose anymore.

At least when they gave her trousers there seemed to be a clear intent in what they were trying to achieve. It didn't look good ('cause Jim Lee doesn't seem to do well with non-scifi designs), but I could see their attempt to make her relevant in today's market (seriously, her bathing suit may be iconic, but I think people are attached to it out of momentum/habit, not because it's actually awesome). The DCnU redesign just comes across as giving up, just because her latest revamp failed to catch on with consumers.

  2. @Wrath - I completely agree. Very well said. I hadn't caught that preview yet, but if I saw it for the first time completely unaware of who the character was, I can't honestly say I'd identify that as Wonder Woman.

"Change for change's sake" is, I think, an entirely accurate statement.

I like the "classic" look, but I think WW could be made modern while still being identifiable and, you know, actually modern (not a '90's relic). Hopefully we'll see a lot of that here.

  3. I'm with you guys (Wrath and Alex), the old look is iconic, but I really hope they get away from the panties. It mostly reminds me of 80's workout videos. I have some ideas, but I'll throw my two cents in the Redesign contest. Looking forward to it!

  5. I have never seen her in pants before! I always wondered how annoying it would be to FIGHT in underpants like hers... or any underpants. I don't even like eating at a table in my underpants, let alone kicking you-know-what. For realism's sake, I'd love to see her in some pants made for protecting her legs from ... stuff.

  6. I think the outfit designed by Daniel Irizarris (on Project Rooftop; June 16th) had a good balance between pants and classic-look-panties: he gave her sporty boxers under an ancient-Greece-style armored skirt. Very functional.

  7. @Richard, thanks for that visual, I kind of like that look. I have been a WW fan since I was a kid & even dressed like her on several occassions, I hated walking in it let alone thinking of how she has to fight in it!

  8. Wonder Woman in PANTS!!!
Why? Because she forgot to shave her legs?

Come on! Two of Wonder Woman's greatest attributes is her "Daring", and "Confidence".

Wonder Woman in spandex wouldn't do anything more than put her in the same class as Bat-chick, Cat-girl, and 1000 other Tim Gunn designed fashion models.

"Oh, I think she would look simply Fabulous in a Full Length Red, White, and Blue Chiffon dress, with a Golden Sashe, and..."

Yeah, Right! And when she spins around real fast her dress becomes a "Buzz Saw". That's just great!

Note: If there's two things that intimidate women, it's another woman's legs, and boobs. Take those two things away, and all you got is some guy.

  9. CBL - I disagree. Wonder Woman can work in the "panties" look, the "skirt" look, or the "pants" look, but the execution is key. It's all in the execution. The problem is that, in recent attempts to design WW with pants, the execution has failed. I'm going to be really curious to see what submissions we get that put Wonder Woman in pants, and if they succeed in a way that professional attempts have not. I'll be curious to see what everyone says.

  10. Alex - I can go with the skirt. But pants? I'll reserved judgment till after the contest, of course. But I will say this. To raise my eye brow, they would have to go Way Beyond professional attempts.

Not that I am setting forth a challenge, please understand. As I Really would not like to see WW in pants. And not, for reasons of nostalgia. But for reasons of femininity. I mean, a female superhero-ine who's ALL Woman, would be a tribute to both men and women. But a heroine who puts her pants on one leg at a time just like any other Man, honors no one.

Also, and I just thought of this. WW is an Amazon from Greek mythology. Where, even the men didn't where pants. So I don't know, but that it just doesn't seem any more right to put pants on WW, than to take away her golden lasso, and give her a .45 Automatic. I mean both, will extract the truth. Right? So why not give her a couple of 45's (no pun intended), but that the lasso is a part of the Amazon legend, and the pants, are not.

Nevertheless, should such an entry win, I will in no wise "critique". In fact, I will post the contest winner on my own blog (with a link to your blog), with permission, of course. ~ CBL

  11. CBL - Personal preference is fine. Personally, I like her "skirt" look, but I think pants, executed properly, are just as fine. I got a submission today that, in my opinion, pulls off the pants nicely. Better than the professional attempts. And by that, I mean the attempts made within DC Comics with the 2010 and upcoming Flashpoint revamps. The submission received is definitely "professional" quality. I just think that the official pantsified versions we've seen are half-baked attempts at putting her in pants.

Of course, we'll see how it goes. I'm open to all kinds of critiques, as long as there is a legitimate basis behind them.

Feel free to re-post anything on your blog; no permission needed, just please link to Superhero of the Month. Thanks!

  12. I just think WW in pants ain't a bad idea(not because i made WW in one). Of-course legs are part of a woman's beauty but i don't really like the idea of seeing anyone in a swimsuit fighting baddies(not that the original is bad)... when you say full legs ain't pretty... i think that wrong! i mean, i've never seen Miss Universe competing in a pair of lingerie... they still make out as beautiful women; actually much better. so, its not the clothes that matter; its the execution!!!
