Darth Vader Results - Part 1

Alright! Superhero of the Month took a short break to make some minor but needed updates, and enjoy a brief bit of R&R -- particularly for the Labor Day weekend. In any case, batteries are recharged and we are back with the first batch of Darth Vader submissions!

Sebastian von Buchwald

“Dark, imposing, fear-inducing and fancy headwear are the things that define Darth Vader for me visually and I tried to keep those four things in my design. I show the top of his head so he doesn’t come across as a full robot but kept the breathing mask thingy that is so iconic of the character. I really like how this turned out and I love doing shiny, reflective stuff. Unlike, say, human skin, you don’t have to worry about subtlety when you’re doing something like metal.”

Lemurtree
"I've moved away from the pure black outfit and used quite a bit of red - established as a suitable Dark-Side-of-the-Force colour already given Darth Maul, the Imperial Guard and Vader's own lightsaber. Beyond that, I wanted the helmet to be reminiscent of a skull. I also hit on the idea of a vertical split down the middle of the helmet, as if when it's removed it peels off like a pod or alien egg with sticky residue. And to add to the unnerving effect I gave Vader a third eye - letting him see in infrared or ultraviolet. I liked the idea that he can see things others can't. I never liked the movie costume's quilted look, so gave him trooper-style armour over an undersuit of lizard skin."

Mark Hartman
Editor's Note: Mark didn't leave us with any thoughts on his redesign.

Sier X

"I went with some other dark colours that, should you see him in the shadows, would most definitely blend in, but if you caught him in the light, you'd see your own blood on his hands, and tears pooling around his boots."

What do you think? Let us know in the comments below. Darth Vader submissions are due on September 23, so get cracking on them! Check out the Official Contest Announcement for all the details!

  1. I give Sebastian my attention on this set. To me his just screams intimidation. With the red tubing on the second one, although a good idea, I think maybe too much red was used. The third kinda seems comical to me. The last one look like Bobba Fett a lot more so than Dart Vader

  2. Darth Vader is a tough row to hoe...he's more than iconic, he's just so well designed in the first place. Sebastian von Buchwald actually changes things up-- showing the gross Humpty Dumpty head-- but the Wolverine-claw-lightsaber ruins it for me.

  3. The problem with Darth Vader is that he is such an icon of villainy, his appearance has reached almost the emblematic status of a logo. Change it too much and you might as well have made up a new Sith lord. Change it too little and what's the point of a redesign?

I dig that Buchwald left the head exposed, though the rest of it is a little over-designed. The red piping on Lemurtree's is inspired - connects Vader with another iconic Sith motif - but there's a bit too much of it.

Looking forward to seeing more great entries.

  4. I think they are all so creative and I love it! I wouldn't have an idea of where to start. Sebastian's I would say would have to strike the most fear in me at first glance, but to me I'd have to say Lemurtree's is my favorite.

A little much on the red, but I can imagine him fading into the shadows and emerging from the with the eerie red glow. Sebastian's Vader is immensely cool and fear inducing and I could imagine him barrelling his way through anything. While Lemutree's I see more stealthy and easier to surprise enemies.

I wish luck to all and I look forward to more!

  6. Sebastians is basically the design I was gonna try, (something similar I mean, especially the head gear) so I'm not gonna do one this time. it would look like a copy of his. a BAD,copy of his. haha
