"I just tried to go simple and fun without losing any of the recognizable aspects of the character. Ultimately, I still aimed for the evil spacesuit samurai the films had in the core design. The whole thing probably fits better into a cartoon universe, but I thought the addition of a bubble helmet and a bigger blade on the lightsaber was different enough to set it apart. Also felt a jacket similar to those samurai generals wore was a fine (and more manageable, since he can take it off before a fight) substitute for the cape."

"I wanted to keep the same basic silhouette as the classic costume. I used more angles and tones just to make the art read more clearly. The helmet has almost a skull face to really get that bad guy vibe across. I kept the cloth bits because they scream Vader to me."

What do you all think? Let us know in the comments below! Also, check out the other Darth Vader redesigns we've received so far. Check out the Official Contest Announcement for all the details on this month's redesign challenge, and send yours in soon! They're due September 23!

In the first one I like the Samurai General take instead of the cape, however the bubble dome just destroys the concept for me. It makes him look more aquatic then spacey. Enlarging the blade was a nice touch and I like that. Lastly, I think the character design is just too bulky all in all.
ReplyDeleteThe second one all I can say is that it just really reminds me of General Grievous and that takes away from the iconism of Vader a whole lot if I am thinking of someone else.
The third was a a rather good attempt. I think the powering up idea works well and although the Sith ad space would take some getting used to I could see it. Only real qualm I have with this one is the head seems a bit too small and the overall posture doesn't really seem like a robotic stance you would expect.
Very...very cool site. Did you know that you can make money with it directly? Look up the monetize section on your dashboard. This being a Blog of Note, I bet you could get some income with it. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Michael. Interestingly, I tried setting up an AdSense account through the Monetize option before, but Google denied the application, citing Superhero of the Month as "too difficult to navigate". Go figure.
ReplyDeleteCool drawings. The post of the Darth Vader drawing contest is very relevant to the timing of George Lucas coming out with revised/new Starwars DVDs. Also there has been a lot of news about Darth Vader no longer being silent in a scene, and now shouts "No" when he throws the evil Emperor Palpatine down a shaft.

I understand Darth Vader's connection to comicbooks. But why again do you call him a superhero?
ReplyDeleteRedesigns are open to superheroes and villains. I felt Vader fell into the latter category. We probably won't do movie/comic crossovers often, but I wanted to this month since Star Wars is being released on Blu-Ray.
ReplyDeleteI was just irritated by the name of this blog. So it's super-person of the month?
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry the name irritated you. Generally, it's heroes. Vader is the 11th contest we've held, and with Harley Quinn, he's the second villain we've featured. The next character up for a redesign is Batman, so 10 out of 12 characters are heroes. Heroes are the focus, but what are heroes without their villains?
