Sebastian von Buchwald's Superman

Since contributing to August's Wonder Woman contest, Sebastian von Buchwald's become something of a regular here at Superhero of the Month, always delivering solid pieces. Here, he tackles a hero that is often redesigned, and almost always with controversy:

“I toyed with many ideas on how to tackle this and tried a bunch of different designs before I settled on this one. I didn’t have a particular desire or agenda in mind when redesigning Supes, I mostly went with something that I liked enough and would be recognizable, if not as the real Superman, then maybe as one in some alternate universe.”

Personally, I've never really dug the classic Superman get-up, and as far as redesigns go, I think the DCnU design is among the worst. I'd prefer Sebastian's -- or one of the many you can find on the web -- to the official DC(n)U version any day.

  1. Very cool. Would certainly solve any problems with modern day recreations of Superman and the actors who don't want to wear the red pants lol. Might suggest coloured boots though, maybe in the torso's blue colour...?

Nice blog btw, congrats on the Blog of Note mention. *follows*

  2. I'd lose the red stripes on the sides of the chest and maybe put some color on the end of the sleeves. Other than that, this is a really solid redesign. I don't understand how come there can be so many awesome interpretations of Superman online, that stay true to his iconic status, and yet we get stuck with lameness in the comics.

  3. Nice! This makes me think of a "Dark Reign" version of Superman, though.

  4. I agree with you. I never really liked the old DC style either. This new style is not really my taste, but it is more interesting. On a side note. Thank for your blog. I have having to review some super hero apps for the folks at Good Apps. Would it be ok if I cited your blog in my article? You have very good quality content. Thanks!
