Superhero of the Month - Yifan Jiang's Green Lantern

Congratulations Yifan Jiang -- June's Superhero of the Month! Yifan's winning Guy Gardner entry snags a place in our anniversary event, and the opportunity to guest-judge July's War Machine contest!

June's judges include the SHotM crew, as well as April and May's contest winners, Ally Cat and Ross Radke, respectively.

Yifan Jiang's Guy Gardner - 34/40

Alex: If you've seen the DC reboot designs, you know that Guy kind of got screwed in the redesign department. But considering some of the other official DC redesigns, maybe that's a good thing? In any case, this Guy serves wonderfully as an update. A lot more punk rock, but I definitely think it works! The only thing I'm not sold entirely on are the boots. I love the inclusion of the Lantern, but it seems a litle too busy. But overall, very well done!

Mitch: This is the perfect Guy Gardner. It's rough, in-your-face, sure -- but more importantly, it stands out. It's got the green-with-white, which set Guy apart from a lot of Lanterns who just like green-and-Black. My favorite thing about this is the wide lapels that calls back to his old jacket. And as much as I liked his mop-top hair, this looks pretty good too.

Ross: I'm not a fan of Guy Gardner but this is still an excellent design. You can practically smell the stank coming off this leather-clad hooligan. Good balance between the "non-costume" look and some classic elements. The Lantern logo boot buckles are great as is the mohawk. From what little I've read of Guy, he's the Green Lantern you're supposed to love to hate. The jack@$# whose very membership in the Corps is not only a testament to the old adage "don't just a book by its cover", but is also a sad statement of the human race. Guy was the best man for the job? Really?

Runners up are after the jump!

OFFICIAL CONTEST ANNOUNCEMENT - WAR MACHINE

James "Rhodey" Rhodes is War Machine, the occasional partner of one Invincible Iron Man. Rhodey has even stepped into the red-and-gold armor himself on more than one occasion, but we all know and love him when he dons his silver suit adorned with missile launchers and machine guns.

War Machine's armor, like Iron Man's, has changed over the years, but it's typically various shades of grey, with lots of weapons. Lots of weapons.

Your redesigns are due by July 23 at 6:00 PM MDT. As usual, entries will be posted as they are submitted between July 1 - 23 and the winner announced on July 31.

There are hundreds of ways to interpret War Machine's armor. It may be worth your time to check out Project: Rooftop's Iron Man: Invincible Upgrade contest that was held back in 2008. Check out the winners and runners up, and send your War Machine interpretations to superheroofthemonth@gmail.com

Green Lantern Results - Part V

It's the final Green Lantern redesign post! And it's super-sized, with 16 entries!

Kicking it off is the return of SHotM favorite Lee Chen Fang with two redesigns:
Lee Chen Fang's Hal Jordan
"Hal grew from an arrogant test pilot to a leader within the Green Lantern Corps. His design revolves around the theme of a pilot and a space cowboy. The costume of a military figure evokes a sense of respect and authority."

Lee Chen Fang's Kyle Rayner
"I made Kyle more young-looking, fun-loving, implusive and flamboyant. Since Kyle is an artist, I gave him a more casual, fashionable, hippier and light-weight design, while still retaining the essense of the original costume design that made him stand out from the rest of the Corps."

Adam Hurley's Holika Rahn
"I went with Holika Rahn because she obviously has the best hair in the corps."

Editor's Note: Adam, I honestly can't think of a better reason to make that choice! :) - Alex

Carlos Bercini's Kyle Rayner
"What I tried going for is more of an armor like suit and light green-white spandex underneath, keeping it simple and easy for the character to move around in a fight, but at the same time providing the necessary protection. I also added some sort of armor bracelets on the forearms that are connected to the wrists, bringing support and solid strength to these body parts; I have always imagined that if the ring fires an extreme amount of power the Green Lantern would need some sort of extra arm support to prevent recoil, like soldiers of police officers do with their guns when holding them with both hands. I also tried to go for a more half-faced mask. No special reason for this, I just liked it."

Manny Aguilera returned to triple-dip in this month's contest with another more unique member of the Corps:

Manny Aguilera's Rot Lop Fan
Editor's Note: Manny didn't leave any particular notes about this redesign.

K. Lee's Kyle Rayner
"When Kyle became the last Green Lantern, a reconception of the Lantern Corps was long overdue. I see them as more of undercover beat cops. Kyle's costume is connected to the ring. When he powers up, the suit becomes a projector for constructs just as the ring does, giving Kyle better protection (as he is the last Lantern). Powered down, he's hardly recognisable as a Lantern. The green gloves are actualley constructs to hide the ring in the undercover mode.

"My main idea is that the 'Lantern' is a misconception. The symbol on his chest and the ring rather represent the 'first sunrise', the central sun rising behind Oa. This represents the symbol of order: when the first day rose, the universe was in perfect harmony. The 'Lanterns' represent that.

"The symbol is thus not a depiction, it's a circular window showing Oa. The 'Lantern' shape is the result of the light shining out of that window. The window is actaully a wormhole that connects Kyle to the source of his powers."

Joy Christian Juyo submitted three Green Lantern redesigns at once:
Joy Christian Juyo's Kilowog
"I just made some few minor tweaks to the GL uniform -- show some skin and make it look like sportswear. I dunno, I see Kilowog as the gym instructor of the Green Lantern Corps..."

Joy Christian Juyo's G'Nort
"I saw G'Nort as a physician of the Green Lantern Corps, so I made a goggles instead of the traditional GL mask. I modified the GL logo and incorporated a long overcoat to the overall uniform."

Joy Christian Juyo's Kyle Rayner
"Hal maybe the fearless Green Lantern, but the coolest is Kyle. Since Kyle operates mostly in space now, I designed with a futuristic Tron/Star Wars/Buck Rogers-influence in mind."

Daniel Shaman's Boodikka
"I always imagine Boodikka as the Big Barda of the Green Lantern Corps. I tried to make her appearance wrestler/athlete-like, who trusts her own fighting skills over the ring's power."

Richard JP LeGuen also sent in an additional entry:
Richard JP Le Guen's Kyle Rayner
"A follow up to my last attempt to portray a Green Lantern with an emphasis on being a police officer. While I started with the idea of Salaak as a British bobby, I got interested in the idea of interpreting the vertical line on Kyle's original costume as a sash with a badge, and I ended up drawing more inspiration from Canadian Mounties than Bobbies."

Next, a couple from Brian Post:

Brian Post's Kyle Rayner
"I went with the whole 'Emerald Knight' motif, with light construct armor that the ring would activate when he is about to go into action."

Brian Post's Sodam Yat
"I figured that since he is more or less the flag bearer for the corps he might look good with a more regal appearance."

Dimitrios Kasdaglis

"I'm thinking emerald/intergalactic/police force/alien lantern/ring-bearer, joined into something new."

Amanda Sparks' Kyle Rayner
"I wanted to give it a military style in many different ways, since the Green Lanterns are something of an intergalactic police force. I added in a bit of armor, because it never hurts to have a little more protection."

Edson "Edo" Obando's Hal Jordan
"The idea comes from the fact that the ring is the source of the power also connected to his symbol on his chest which represents his will or soul. The costume is asymetrical and shows his enemies to beware of the ring and the Corps!"

Wow, what a post! Lots of great redesigns, and a good representation of some of the lesser-known Corps members! There's a lot to take in here, but let us know what you think in the comments below! Check out all the Green Lantern redesigns we've received, and stay tuned! The winner of this month's contest will be announced on June 30, but stay tuned! The next contest announcement is coming, as well as a new Redesigned feature focusing on the Flashpoint redesigns from DC!

Green Lantern Results - Part IV

Samuel Kahlke's Kyle Rayner
"Green Lantern, as a spaced based character, is therefore dark. The costume needs to be immediately recognizable and simultaneously individual. With that in mind, I designed Rayner in a minimalist costume with a clean look that reflects his dedication to both the Corps and its ideals. His costume is infused with green light that reflects the iconography of the lantern, and is more subtle against the massive backdrop of space."

Craig Payne's Kyle Rayner
Editor's Note: Craig didn't leave us any specific thoughts on his redesign.

Let us know what you think in the comments below! Be sure to check out all the Green Lantern redesigns we've received so far.

Green Lanterns are due by 6:00 PM 10:00 PM* MST this Friday, so be sure to get them in ASAP, and stay tuned for the final Green Lantern post before we start narrowing down the finalists!

*I have a class scheduled to go until 9:00 on Friday, so I won't be able to do anything with SHotM submissions until later that night -- so enjoy the extra few hours for those final details!

Green Lantern Results - Part III

I got these yesterday, but it was while I was out and about and catching Green Lantern. So, without further ado, here are some new Green Lantern redesigns for you all:

Manny Aguilera's G'Nort

Manny Aguilera's Ch'p
"I went with G'Not and Ch'p mostly because they were fun to draw and I think are the least respected Lanterns around."

Mario Silva's Tomar Re
"Something cooler for this guy with a more cosmic feeling to the whole lantern suit."

Alejandro Bruzzese's Kyle Rayner
"Kyle Rayner is my Green Lantern. I imagine Ion as an actual organism rather than a being of energy since the Lantern Corps (with the exception of the Black Lanterns, of course) represent life. The rings contain pieces of Ion which manifest as giant luminescent amoebas who respond to the wearer's thoughts. With this in mind, I made my version of Kyle's suit an extension of the organism in his ring. I tried to combine the look of his first suit with the classic Hal Jordan/GL Corps suits while making it more organic in appearance.

"I felt that Kyle himself, being an artist, should have something of an eccentric disheveled look to him. I modeled him after Gael Garcia Bernal for two reasons: 1) I know Kyle is only half Mexican, but I decided to focus on that half since there aren't all that many Hispanic characters in comics, and 2) Bernal's character in Science of Sleep is, in my opinion, the perfect model for Kyle since he's an insecure artist with an uncontrollable imagination."

Green Lantern Results - Part II

After what seemed like an eternity, we've recieved another Green Lantern entry for this month's contest!

Warren Newsom's Arisia Rrab
"I always liked the idea of a teenaged Green Lantern.  I was disappointed when they accelerated Arisia into an adult.  So this is a teenaged Arisia, who is – as most Green Lanterns seem to be – obsessed with Earth and Earth culture. "

Let us all know what you think in the comment's below!

Remember, the Green Lantern Contest ends June 24 at 6:00 PM! All submissions must be turned in before that deadline! Hopefully we'll get many more submissions before then. Until that time, be sure to check out the first batch of Green Lantern's!

Don't forget, the Green Lantern film comes out tomorrow!

Green Lantern Results - Part I

Richard JP Le Guen's Hal Jordan
"I've always wanted to see an interpretation of the Green Lanterns which really emphasizes the nature as a police force. Here, it looks a little too much like the Green Hornet to be a solid Green Lantern redesign, so I'm thinking that drawing more inspiration from British bobbies as opposed to trench coat detectives would yield better results."

Yifan Jiang's Guy Gardner

"I always loved Guy as he is but still wanted to let him "make more sense". Two things were noted ahead as the most important: His personality, and sense of fashion. I tried to make him even fashion forward (Lady GaGa of the DCU, anyone?) but that direction was very hard to control. So ultimately I settled with this rocker look with a little funky touch (belt and boots) because I felt this could maximise his character. If my job done right, then without knowing which GL he is, you should still be able to instantly recognise him as Guy Gardner."

Rodrigo "Quasar" Windt Idalino's Kyle Rayner

Editor's Note: Quasar didn't leave us any thoughts on his Green Lantern.

Robert Schilling's Stel
"Stel originally resembled one of those 1950's robots in the movies, and for some reason DC decided to keep that design for awhile. They eventually changed him up a bit, but he still looks a little dated. While designing him I wanted to make sure he looked like a robot built from alien technology, and hopefully that's what it conveys here."

Great start so far! But what do you all think? Let us know in the comments below!
