SUPERHERO OF THE MONTH - Felipe Fialho's Batman

Congratulations Felipe Fialho, winner of the Superhero of the Month & Batman-News.com Batman redesign contest! Felipe is auto-entered into November's soon to be revealed contest, and has the option of joining us in December's judging!

Your judges for this contest are Superhero of the Month staff, Alex and Mitch, Batman-News.com's founder, Chris, and Ross Radke, who seems to quickly be turning into SHotM's 5th Beatle.

Felipe Fialho's Bruce Wayne - 35/40
Alex: First let me say, I like my Batman dressed in black. It always bothers me when you see "the Dark Knight" dressed in bright blue and gray, while Nightwing and Batwoman have predominantly black suits. So this is more in line with what I think of when I think "the Dark Knight".

I like the minimalist red around the bat logo, and the eyes fit with Bruce's "strike fear into their hearts" mentality. The Tengu mask is brilliant, and absolutely something I could see Bruce, as opposed to Dick or Terry, adopting. It's just plain scary -- the way Batman should be.

Mitch: I think my favorite thing about this is the chest emblem. Subtle, classic bat with red edge lighting? Beautiful. Actually, there are a lot of entries that used red and black, but this one does it best. Red is a strong, bold color, and you have to be careful not to overwhelm the other colors. But here everything is subtle and in just the right spots. Normally I'm not a fan of the stylized bat faces, but this one has a samurai feel.

Chris: Batman is supposed to strike fear into the hearts of the criminals he fights, and I definitely wouldn't want to come face to face with this Batman in a dark alley!

Ross: I really like the skull-bat mask and red eyes, although I'd go for longer ears. The red outline for the bat symbol is cool. The belt stands out too much. Overall, I think this is a costume that works and would look great in a comic action scene - the realism isn't necessary. I'd almost like to see this in a more cartoony style. The problem I had is that I don't see this as something Bruce Wayne would wear. It's not "Zorro" enough.

Check out the runners up after the jump!

Happy Halloween

Happy Halloween, Superhero of the Month readers!

The Batman winner and finalists will be announced this evening at 6:00 PM MDT. The new banner, calendar, and appropriate site updates will soon follow.

Batman-News.com

If you've been following our October Batman contest, you would have noticed that it was presented by Superhero of the Month and Batman-News.com. Batman-News.com has been gracious enough to present this contest with us, and I thought it'd be a good idea for you all to get to know a little bit about our co-sponsor and what exactly it is they do. I asked Batman-News.com's founder and show runner Chris some questions, and here are his answers:

Superhero of the Month: Why did you start Batman-News.com?

Batman-News.com: My #1 goal with Batman-News.com was to create a Batman website that fans could be proud of. I wanted to start a website that fans wanted to visit, not one they had to visit. I wanted the design to be slick and modern, so that people could easily find the news they wanted.

Superhero of the Month: In the year since Batman-News.com started, it's quickly become the most visited site devoted to Batman films, not just in terms of web traffic, but also in the amount of followers you have on Facebook and Twitter. Has the success been anything you thought it would be when you started it?

Batman-News.com: I did not expect the site to grow as quickly as it did. I never expected it to become the #1 Batman news site during The Dark Knight Rises' production. I thought I could build a loyal readership during this time, and my goal was to grab that #1 slot in a few years during the next movie. I must have been doing something right, because in less than a year Batman-News.com became the #1 Batman news website.

Superhero of the Month: What's been the best thing about running Batman-News.com?

Batman-News.com: The best part about running Batman-News.com is seeing that people really enjoy what I'm doing. I owe all Batman-News.com's success to my readers, and I'm always trying to think about how to make the website better for them. I try to get the community involved with each news post. Rather then give my opinion (or tell my readers how they should feel) I usually close with a question. Over 11,000 comments have been left on the site, and for the most part there have been great conversations and respectful debates.

Superhero of the Month: Where do you see Batman-News.com going after The Dark Knight Rises wraps?

Batman-News.com: Batman-News.com will be growing after The Dark Knight Rises. We've already expanded into covering comic books, with every Batman-related comic in the "New 52" being reviewed by Andrew Asberry. I look forward to covering the next great Batman video game from Rocksteady, as well as the straight-to-DVD movies. There's also rumors of a Justice League movie that may be out as soon as 2013. We'll definitely be busy!

If you've not checked out Batman-News.com yet, I'd suggest you do. It's not only the Batmasite fans deserve, but the one fans need. Thousands of fans across the 'Net have found it to be the best place to get the best news, information and spoilers for The Dark Knight Rises. And with the DC "New 52" relaunch, it's the best place to get the latest reviews on all of your Batman-related comics!

November's Contest Is...

Thanks EW for the image.
...going to be announced November 4. All I can tell you for now is that it's NOT the Riddler! It will not be like our traditional contests and, unlike the traditional contests, isn't going to be open to the public like the last twelve have been.

That said, I hope to keep Superhero of the Month very lively throughout November! From November 7 - 29, we'll be running all kinds of features. Since November's contest has three -- three! -- sponsors, we'll be spotlighting each of them in turn. There will be an early announcement for December's contest, and a couple of site-related posts. But most importantly, I really want to spotlight your work.

Any redesign. Any hero or villain. Re-imagined, themed, it's all fair!

This is a chance to really let imaginations flow. And since 2012 contests will all be reader-suggested, your redesigns in November may influence the direction of a contest or two next year.

As always, send your redesigns to superheroofthemonth@gmail.com, and follow any submission guidelines that otherwise apply. Stay tuned to see your work on the site!

Batman Results - Part 8 [UPDATED]

First and foremost, I'm sorry this is late! I said on Twitter and Facebook that this would be up by 9:00 PM MDT, but other things got the best of me and here we are a couple of hours later. In any case, there's a load of great stuff here, so check out the eighth and final batch of submissions for the Superhero of the Month & Batman-News.com Batman redesign contest!
Lee Chen Fang's Bruce Wayne

"Bruce's design is angular and hardier looking. It reflects the sophistication, complexity, weath that he possess. His gauntlets not only act as shield and weapon but also as extra storage other than his utility belt.
Batman with a yellow Bat symbol is very iconic therefore decided to use it. Modified the Bat Symbol to streamline with his cowl. As a constant reminder, Bruce inscribed the design of the Sinestro Corps onto his Utility belt."

Lee Chen Fang's Dick Grayson

"Dick's design is base on simplicity. Being a acrobat he prefer to have more flexibility and mobility, therefore he uses a "skeleton" utility belt which only carries the bare minimium equipment and his trusty Eskrima sticks. Dick modified his Eskrima sticks that can powerup and discharge electric currents in time of need against more powerful enemies. Used the red color scheme rather than his Nighwing blue color scheme to differentiate that he is a different persona (Batman/Nightwing). This costume might actually be a bridge to Batman Beyond's costume."

Mark Hartman
"If one color sums up the the blood and fear associated with bats and the rage that fuels Batman's crusade, it's red. My goal with this design was to make the costume more graphic, more representational and more functional. The ears and fangs serve to make Batman more of a monster to his enemies, while the red serves both a graphic and functional purpose. The cape and mask's stark contrast in the black of night serve as a distraction. Combatants are unable to see what his arms and legs are doing beneath the cape. As Batman picks through his pockets (if any hero deserves Rob Liefeld's pocket treatment, it's Batman) his attackers see a flying, twisting red demon."

Alicia Zybert
Editor's Note: Alicia didn't leave any particular thoughts on her redesign.

Arlen Raitt's Bruce Wayne
"I was going for something more rugged and 'just get the job done'. He has a much more gritty feel to him, both with style and with how he stands.  I wanted a more understated bat symbol, so I played with a negative space approach -- the black on his chest, when combined with his cape and cowl create one giant bat symbol. With his cape, I decided to try a slightly more minimalist approach and segmented it into three parts and modeled it after the actual physiology of a bat."

Editor's Note: The second image will be on Facebook soon!

Arlen Raitt's Dick Grayson
"With Dick I went for more of a sleek look. I don't feel that he would ever voluntarily use a cape; of all the Robins, he had the tiniest and was the first to drop it once he went out on his own. In adition, Dick never wanted to be Batman. At least, not Bruce's Batman, so I went with more of a passing of the torch, rather than him acting as a stand in."

Darwin's Terry McGinnis
"I like the original Batman Beyond design for its minimalist look, but thought it could use a few futuristic and scary touches without going overboard. The wings were made to more like a cape and for dramatic and tactical affect. The mouth on the original design always bugged me, so I made it as a face plate."

Gabriel Sousa's Bruce Wayne

"Being Halloween, I wanted to make a scarier Batman. Initially I thought of making him look more like a bat/vampire, but that’s already been done. So then I thought, 'Who’s scarier than the Joker?' No one. He’s the guy who puts real fear into innocents and criminals alike. With that in mind I got to work, with my Batman drawing inspiration from his greatest foe, haunting the streets in order to make them safe.

"I wanted to maintain the mask, yet give him some fiery hair for impact. For a scarier and crazier look I gave him a Chelsea grin and I came up with a twisted version of the bat symbol. The jacket was initially short but making it longer made more sense. It keeps the arm spikes and has a black flower as a reference to the ones Joker uses. For me the only other color -- besides black -- that would work for Batman is red. It’s scarier than the usual blue or grey. I know he looks more like a villain than a superhero but that ambiguity has sometimes been a characteristic of the obsessed Bruce Wayne."

Joe Hanus's Bruce Wayne
"Went retro pulp style here, mask was heavily influenced by the serials of the 40's. I like my Batman utilitarian and not so streamlined, looking more like a real world person."

Benjamin J. Taylor
Editor's Note: Benjamin's thoughts on his piece are included in the image, so click it to go big!

Felipe Fialho's Bruce Wayne
"Bruce Wayne's set out to create a character that inspired fear in the criminal underworld. Beause of this, the first thing that I changed was the mask, referencing Tengu masks, redesigned with samurai influences and red eyes to input fear. The suit was inspired by that worn in the earthquake saga and Batwoman's suit, mixed with the uniform of the Nolan movies, with the symbol embossed in red. The gadgets will be distributed by gloves, mask, cape, boots and in the belt."

Finally, I got a very cool email from a dad who told me that his son Connor, age 10, is a fan of Superhero of the Month and wanted to contribute to this month's contest:

Connor's Batman
Growing up, I was always drawing superheroes, Batman in particular, and thought that it was awesome that we have people as young as Connor checking out the site, getting inspired, and wanting to contribute. Thanks Connor for your contribution, and I hope you keep drawing and designing your own heroes, and new takes on the heroes you read about in comics and cartoons!

Update - 10/26

Gaz contacted me, wanting to submit in time for the deadline, but unable to due to Internet access problems. Although deadlines are fairly concrete, I'm not that much of a stickler, and am willing to work with anyone reasonably.

Batman Results - Part 7

Today's post brings you the art of a couple of Superhero of the Month regulars. Both of these guys have submitted to several contests, and both have come close to clenching the top spot. Batman-News.com and SHotM are pleased to present you with the art of Peter Dora and Brian Post!

Peter Dora's Bruce Wayne

"Batman needs to be able to move quickly and silently, and not be too over encumbered by excessive armor, yet needs to protect himself from things like gun fire and blades. I wanted to give him a little more armor than his basic black and grays, but not as much as the Nolan movies. I never really understood why his mouth was exposed, especially when he goes up against characters like the Joker who is notorious for using weapons like laughing gas. I reshaped his cowl to be more of a high tech helmet and gave the ears a more bat-like appearance. His bat symbol has been spread to cover most of his chest and shoulders in a fun design. I gave him electrified gauntlets so he can take out his adversaries quickly and silently. The utility belt is a little more streamlined, and places like his knees, shins, and forearms are more heavily armored. I also gave him red eyes to make him a little more scary."

Brian Post's Terry McGinnis

"I decided to keep it fairly close to the original, since this version of Batman isn't all that recognizable anyway. I made the crimson red more prominent, and modified the belt so it is more of a buckle with some compartments. I changed the bat insignia on the chest to make it look more futuristic and streamliney and sharp-angley. I thought making the mask and cowl that same color of red would look interesting and set the design apart from just having a standard issue black Batman mask. In all, I think this concept has elements of Batman, but also Robin and Nightwing, so hopefully I enhanced that relationship."

Batman Results - Part 6

One thing that I think is fun about contests where there's more than one iteration of a character -- in this case, the Bruce Wayne, Dick Grayson, Jean Paul Valley and Terry McGinnis versions of Batman -- is seeing artists submit their interpretation of how these different people behind the masks would stylize their uniforms. We saw this earlier in the month when Robert Schilling sent in three Batmen, and now Richard JP Le Guen is striking a second time with his version of Dick Grayson, presented to you by SHotM and Batman-News.com!
Richard JP Le Guen's Dick Grayson

"I think the Batman Beyond costume and the Bruce Timm cartoon version of Nightwing are too similar to be coincidence, so here's my take on the costume 'between' the two -- Dick Grayson wearing something very similar to the Batman Beyond suit but still sporting his signature blue. I also took the liberty of removing the nose from the mask; Dick's been wearing domino masks for his whole career so I don't think he'd be comfortable wearing a full cowl."

Atlantis Goose also provided us with an interesting concept for what could be an interesting take on the Batman:
Atlantis Goose
"I thought of Batman no longer as an outlaw, but the law itself. I gave him a badge and a suit upgrade in white, blue, black, and a little red for the bat logo outline. The whole idea is to bring him out in the
daylight in a more modern time setting in Gotham. I got rid of the cape because it looked outdated with the whole suit."

Batman Results - Part 5

Redesigns for the Batman-News.com & Superhero of the Month Batman redesign contest keep coming in. As we enter the weekend (huzzah!), here are a couple more for your viewing pleasure:

Ken Landefeld's Dick Grayson
"My redesign for Batman, a new Dick Grayson costume were he ever to return to the cowl. The cowl is now part of the torso suit and the cape is a separate piece that wraps around his upper torso. Easily removable, enabling a free range of movement for the extreme acrobatics Dick might need to perform."

Rofe
"I never liked the Batman's cape, looks good on the comic book pages, but in real life Batman's cape would be a hindrance, a nuisance."

What do you all think? Let us know in the comments below, and be sure to check out all of the Batman redesigns we've received so far!

Batman redesigns are due in ten days, by 8:00 PM MDT on October 24. Check out the Official Contest Announcement for all the details on the contest and how to submit!

Batman Results - Part 4

Entries for the Superhero of the Month & Batman-News.com Batman redesign contest keep on pouring in! Here are a few more we've received:

Warren Newsom
"I've been watching Batman: The Brave and the Bold and have become a big fan of the jet pack and wings that his cape can mysteriously turn into.  I know that wouldn’t work in the regular Batman book, so I started wondering what would.  My answer is something akin to the parachute cape used in Batman Begins, except mine is more structured.  It would allow him to glide and fly and folds neatly into the backpack he wears.  The backpack also serves as extra storage for weapons and gear.  I decided to go against tradition by not having him in black or blue, instead going with a dark red because red is just so dramatic."

Teague Tysseling
"I focused on the whole 'strike fear into the hearts of criminals' bit and took some inspiration from the samurai masks supposed intent to scare enemies because of the demonic and monsterous faces they were carved into."

Vini Visentini's Dick Grayson
Editor's Note: Vini didn't leave on thoughts on their entry...yet.

Batman Results - Part 3

We're back with more entries in the Superhero of the Month & Batman-News.com October Batman redesign challenge!

Lemurtree's Bruce Wayne

"I've gone for a traditional form-fitting jumpsuit, although I've added a woven texture to suggest that it might be made of a tougher material than spandex -- a high-tech weave of fibers like Kevlar and Nomex. The helmet, breastplate, shin and forearm sections of the suit are rigid, carbon fiber composites. Batman should be able to move with incredible agility, so armor has to be a secondary consideration, applied only where it won't get in the way. What armor there is must be tough but incredibly light. I know green is closely associated with another Justice League superhero, but it's the color of things that glow creepily in the dark. Hence the green, replacing yellow in Batman's traditional color scheme.

"I've also thrown in a Batmobile - a modified Pagani Huayra."

Sebastian von Buchwald's Bruce Wayne
“This is a fairly conservative redesign of Batman. I gave him a bit or armor and, in an effort to give the character more “bat” qualities, I removed the eye slits and, though it may not be noticeable, the cape is sewn into his arms. Just like a bat! I was gonna do the same for the legs but it just turned into a really impractical design.”

Leo Gonçalves
"I thought of Batman with a samurai look."

Mase0ne
"I always thought that Batman should be pretty much in black with a contrasting logo."

KirbBrimstone
Editor's Note: KirbBrimstone didn't leave on thoughts on their entry...yet.

Lots of solid redesigns coming in, eh? But what do you all think? Let us know in the comments below! Be sure to check out all of the Batman redesigns we've received so far, and be sure to submit yours soon! They're due October 24, so check out the Official Contest Announcement for all the details.

Batman Results - Part 2

Batman-News.com and Superhero of the Month are back with more redesigns for our October contest!

Robert Schilling returns with a trio of great Batman redesigns:

Robert Schilling's Bruce Wayne
"For this redesign I wanted to give Batman a more militaristic look, giving him the helmet and armor. I feel like the Batman in the comics looks very vulnerable with his skin tight grey suit and cape, so it seems like he needed something. Especially since he's a mortal man, he needs all the protection he can get. I also feel like it correlates nicely with Bruce Wayne's very ridged, cold demeanor."

Robert Schilling's Jean Paul Valley
"Okay, so I had to do a little research on this guy because I've never heard of him. I have to say that Valley was one of the most fun I've had in a redesign, and I think it's because the original is just soooooo terrible. Their weren't  many elements from the original that could be well translated into a modern design. So I mainly focused on Valley's back story (tech-savvy man trained to be an assasin) and his original color scheme to come up with a new look."

Robert Schilling's Terry McGinnis
"I'm a big fan of the Batman Beyond series, so this redesign was especially fun for me. The original design was just so sleek and different from Bruce Wayne's Batman, and that really appealed to me. For my redesign, I wanted to give him an even more futuristic look, something with a lot of Tron elements to it. And as much as I love the original costume, I've always questioned how his mouth works with that mask. Does his mask conform to his mouth when he talks or what? I don't know, so I gave him a big ol' helmet."

Each Batman here is so different from the last that all of them are strong contenders! But what do you all think? Let us know in the comments below, and be sure to check out all the Batman redesigns we've receiveds so far! Be sure to submit yours before October 24!

Batman Results - Part 1

Alright! They've been a long time coming, but here they are -- the first round of redesigns in the Superhero of the Month & Batman-News.com Batman contest!

George Kambadais
"There's no logical explanation for this redesign. When I did this my mind was somewhere between Batman: The Animated Series and Batman Beyond. I have no idea who's under the mask, but it could be Bruce, or Dick, or someone else like Commissioner Gordon or Alfred. I just did it for fun!"

Winston Gambro's Bruce Wayne
"I focused on an armored version as seen in the Nolan films."

Richard JP Le Guen's Bruce Wayne
"I wanted to try keeping the blue-groin-area/gray-legs without resorting to over-the-pants-underwear, so I tried putting Batman in cowboy chaps! And since it would be tough, getting all that bat-equipment into just a belt, Batman's sporting a (small) bat-pack under his cape."

Alex M. Wiley
"So I went with a more steampunk style at first, with the goggles, breathing apparatus (for his smoke bombs) and the shirt itself. Then I went with a slightly more medieval look with his armored boots. Had to keep the utility belt and the cape and the ears obviously and this is what I came up with."

What do you all think? All very different, but great takes on the Batman. Let us know what you think in the comments below, and be sure to send us your Batman redesigns before October 24! Check out the Official Contest Announcement for details!

Choose February's Contest!

February's a fair way off, but on Superhero of the Month, we keep a calendar that lists upcoming contests three months out so that artists know what is coming up. There are a couple of reasons for this. One is that artists may not be intrigued by a War Machine contest, but are quite interested in a Wonder Woman contest. Coincidentally, this gives them more time to work on a submission they're interested in, and allows them to see what else may catch their eye in the future.

For the past year, Superhero of the Month has selected the heroes and villains for each month's contests. Still, we've wanted to involve our great community a bit more, and, for the duration of 2012* at least, are asking readers to choose the heroes and villains for our contests. We've periodically asked for suggestions on Facebook and Twitter, and are now putting them to good use! Since it will have been five months since a female character has been featured for a redesign by the time February rolls around, we're offering six suggested ladies of the comic book world our readers felt were in need of a redesign. Check out the full post for thoughts Mitch and I have in regards to these suggestions, and cast your vote in the poll to the right**.

Drop a line in the comments and give us your thoughts on who among these six you think should be redesigned and why!

Redesigned - October Special Edition

Redesigned is a feature that usually runs every other month, but I came across this redesign and it was something way too cool to pass up.

Michelle Sciuto's Evening Gown Harley Quinn
Michelle Sciuto has contributed to our Harley Quinn, Atom Eve and Wonder Woman contests, and her DeviantArt page hosts an amazing amount of redesigns of the various Batgirls. Harley seems to be another favorite, boasting a fair amount of redesigns as well.

With Harley's recent official redesign drawing some fan ire -- myself included -- this redesign comes as a relief. It imagines Harley in a completely different way, but maintains a lot of the jovial innocence we all know and love from Batman: The Animated Series.

SUPERHERO OF THE MONTH - T. Branch's Darth Vader

Congratulations, T. Branch, winner of the Superhero of the Month Darth Vader contest! Branch really upped the evil factor and turned out a menacing Vader redesign that was a hair above the runners-up.

Thanks to everyone who participated in this month's contest! The site will be fully updated soon with a new banner, and Bryan Young's comments!

T. Branch - 39/50
Mitch: This entry is perfect. It keeps the classic Vader look (bulky, long black cloak, the triangle mask) and adds just enough. Can I assume his other arm and his legs are also robotic? I'd like to see them. Too much showing may take away, possibly too much red. But what I can see, just enough red to be interesting but not enough to overwhelm the black. Love the bit of face you can see. Just enough to know this man is ugly and angry. Little bits of displays are a great touch.

Sally: The thing I like about it most about this redesign is that it has elements of the Emperor, whilst still being recognizable as Vader. I think the hooded cloak and being able to see his eyes would work really well and making the arm look more mechanical with a gauntlet is a nice touch. He doesn't look totally robotic and I think having that glimpse of the scarred man underneath is a great addition. I also like the mix of black and red, especially in the lining of the cloak.

Alex: T. Branch really captures the essence of evil in his piece. I like a lot of elements introduced here, but I can't help but feel this is really similar to Darth Malgus of Star Wars: The Old Republic. (No, I didn't know the name off the top of my head. Yes, I had to look it up.) I like the idea of making Vader seem less robotic and more human, but this just feels too similar to Malgus for me.

Ross: I like the hood, exposed skin and classic grill, but standing next to Emperor Palpatine I don't think it would work so well. The red elements (a common theme through these designs) are a nice touch although I'd lose the Hellboy glove for something a bit more subtle. I like the placement of the Imperial sigil.

Darth Vader Judges

The winner of the Darth Vader contest will be announced tomorrow. Votes are tallied, a winner's been chosen, and now I'm just gathering critiques.

Before we make the winner known, I wanted to introduce you to the judges for September's contest just a little.

Bryan Young works across many different mediums. As a film producer, his last two films (“This Divided State” and “Killer at Large”) were released by The Disinformation Company and were called “filmmaking gold” by The New York Times. He is the author of Lost at the Con and Man Against the Future, and has published comic books with Slave Labor Graphics and Image Comics. He’s a contributor for the Huffington Post and the founder and editor in chief of the geek news and review site Big Shiny Robot! You can follow him on Twitter.

Sally Felton is our August contest winner. She is a London-based freelance graphic designer, photographer and contributor to iStock.

Ross Radke is the only artist (so far!) to have won a Superhero of the Month contest twice, with his redesigns claiming the top spot in both May and July's contests. With so many guest judges covering the Wonder Woman contest, Ross opted to guest-judge the Darth Vader contest.

These three fine folks will be joining Mitch and I at the table to give our takes on what made the Vader redesigns work for us. Check back tomorrow for those results. Until then, check out their sites, buy one of Bryan's books, and relax. See you all tomorrow!
