Robert Parham's Black Canary & Huntress
"The
key to the Birds of Prey is that they are rugged women who will do what
nobody else can, so it was this that I kept in mind when designing
them. Black
Canary has always struck me as a trashy dresser with those fishnets and
leather jacket, so I took that as my starting point and made her the
type of woman who'd be at home in a rough nightclub. I kept leather as
her main texture, but moved the fishnet onto her back and forearms,
covering her up her legs while echoing traditional martial arts arm
strapping. I cut her hair short so that it won't get in the way in a
fight. The
Huntress is a brawler, so I gave her tough leather padding and got rid
of her exposed hair and her cape, which would be a target in battle. I
covered her mouth with black cloth to emphasize her ninja-like stealth,
and mounted her trademark crossbow on her arm so that it can't be
wrestled from her. Her harness-like styling mirrors her traditional crucifix motif, while also suggesting a tough, S+M look."
Matthew Ray's Black Canary & Poison Ivy
"Canary's redesign is an homage to the past. I wanted to reintroduce her
choker (which back in the old days could mimic her cry), and I wanted
to reference that Dinah of yesteryear had black hair and wore a blonde
wig. I decided to go with both
and gave her blonde hair in the front. Poison Ivy's look owes
itself more to form fitting moss or lichen embellished w/ a swirling
leaf design. I felt she would definitely want to keep in contact w/ the
ground so she is sans shoes."

Lemurtree's Power Girl & Batgirl
"The Batgirl outfit is a feminised version of the suit I designed for Batman back in October. I also wanted the contrast of her looking cocky and confident next to Power Girl, even though despite her armour she is much more fragile."

Very much digging both of Robert's designs.
ReplyDeleteI have to say, I think the retooling of the Batman suit for Barbara works fantastically. I really like the segments on the legs; it's "The Dark Knight"-ish, while standing on its own.
ReplyDeletePower Girl really works for me, too. I'm assuming the straps just go over her shoulders to the back and don't form a neck cover, similar to the cape, in which case I think the suit is much more natural than the infamous "cleavage window".
@Alex:
ReplyDeleteYou're right, the idea is that the straps just go up over each shoulder and the purple neckline of her white leotard just carries on round the back of Power Girl's neck. So the Superman pentagon shape is only there when the cape cuts across the top of her chest.
Lemurtree's Batgirl does echos his Batman entry. Nice!

Um, if Robert Parham's Huntress stopped me in an alley I would be seriously concerned. A+
ReplyDeleteLemurtree's batgirl is amazing! well done!
ReplyDeleteBoomwing
Robert Parham's two get my thumbs right up! And not just cos Canary's got my haircut. The Canary bustier could easily look sleazy-i-the-bad-way under the average BoP pen but works really nicely with Robert's art.
ReplyDeleteI also like the spirals on Ray's Canary. 90s in an indie way?
Green on a Batsuit throws me off at first look, but starts to make sense after consideration.
I wasn't too sure about the green, either, but it does kind of exude a tech-y feel for me, which completely makes sense considering Barbara's tenure as Oracle. I was hesitant about it at first, but it really won me over!
DeleteRobert's s&m huntress is original and hardcore while remaining decent and iconic, it's my favorite huntress here.
ReplyDeleteI have to back you it's my favorite huntress here, and it seems in line with the character. I also really like his Black Canary from an artistic perspective, but I just don't feel it reflects Dinah's personality.
