SHotM - Sebastian von Buchwald's Birds of Prey

Congratulations to Sebastian von Buchwald, winner of the Birds of Prey contest! Sebastian has submitted several times and this is his first win, and it's well-deserved!

Because of the nature of this contest, each character was graded individually, and their scores combined. With eight judges and 20 points available to each, the scores shown represent the combined totals out of 160 available points.

Sebastian von Buchwald's Black Canary & Lady Blackhawk - 141/160
Alex: Let's start with Blackhawk. I always thought her skirt was kind of silly, so I'm glad to see it gone. The pants work really well, and all of the colors work rather nicely together. I also appreciate the Birds symbol on her jacket, it's a nice touch. I really like the upper half of Canary -- that jacket scores a 10 in and of itself.  Personally, though, Canary isn't the same to me without her trademark fishnets, impracticality and all. But credit where credit is due, this is probably the best faux-fishnet design I've seen. These are all-around great designs, and worthy of their win.

Taylor: I really enjoyed the practicality of this design. Both looks would be effective in a combat situation yet are still distinctly feminine, which is nice to see in an all-girl team. This look still pays homage to Canary's fishnets, as well as Lady Blackhawk's origins with the eye-patch and holster. A very sleek and elegant design. Well done!

Dee: I love this. Dinah has all of those elements, the fabric that's reminiscent of fishnets, the black with the canary gold highlights, flat shoes and PANTS! Zinda looks truly BAD A**. Her outfit is still military inspired but there is an edge to her that makes you realise she is definitely dangerous.

Chantaal: I'm in love with both of these redesigns! They're so clearly Dinah and Zinda even with the drastic changes. The netting on the sides of Dinah's pants and jacket bring to mind her previous tights, and it's nice to see her legs covered up. Zinda's new jacket is so fabulous, I want one of my own. Love the white pants and gloves as well!

Angel: I like this one quite a bit. I think my favorite part of it is Dinah's look: the fabric that's reminiscent of fishnets without actually BEING fishnets. And I absolutely adore the gold, especially in her shoes (Ahhh, the shoes are so wonderfully practical that I can't stand it.)

Blair: I love the details on both of these designs. There is almost nothing I could see improved here. Black Canary's twist on motorcycle gear is fantastic. The retro pilot feel of Lady Blackhawk really works well. I would only mess around with her color scheme a bit more. All in all, it's pretty clear why these designs came out on top.

Runners up after the jump!

Birds of Prey Honorable Mentions / Site Notes

Before we post the Birds of Prey results, I'd like to thank everyone for their contributions this month. We ran 51 submissions between March 1 - March 24, totaling 102 character redesigns.

Judges have it rough sometimes. You all send in fantastic art, and we have to narrow it down to a winner and four runners-up. It's not an easy task, and it can be hard choosing which pieces move on. While the Top 5 were pretty undisputed, there were several pieces that came close in scoring that deserve a little more recognition:

Rory's Batgirl & Black Canary - 123/160
Ganknott's Black Canary & Huntress - 122/160
Lemurtree's Power Girl & Batgirl - 123/160

Ross Radke's Oracle & Big Barda - 121/160
Cookiepoppet's Power Girl & Black Canary -  121/160
Barry Prioste's Batgirl & Black Canary - 122/160
David Karrow's Hawkgirl & Lady Blackhawk - 126/160
MtReuil's Power Girl & Huntress - 123/160
This month, we're privileged to be joined by the Girls Read Comics crew -- Dee, Chantaal, Angel, and Lina -- at the judge's table. We loved having them on board during last year's Wonder Woman and Superhero of the Year contests, so it's really a pleasure to have them back for another round. For information on Girls Read Comics, I'd recommend reading this write up we originally did on them last August, and you should of course check out their website.

We're also joined by last month's Starfire winner, Blair J. Campbell. You can check out his awesome art at Draw, Blair! DRAW!

This month also marks the first time our newest contributor, Taylor Evans. Taylor joined us for Superhero of the Year judging as a reader of the site, and we're glad to have him on board now as a regular contributor.

Lastly, you may have noticed if you've posted a comment recently, it informs you that it'll be approved upon moderation. No one's done anything that warrants moderation. Rather, moderation lets us know when a comment has been posted, rather than us having to seek out comments, in the event that a response is warranted. Occasionally people comment on older posts, and those comments can easily get lost in the mix of those made on new posts. Please just realize it helps us more easily realize when someone has commented on a post. But if it ends up being a stupid idea, we'll shut it off.

Thanks for your continued support of Superhero of the Month. Stay tuned, the Birds of Prey winner and runners-up will be announced tomorrow!

OFFICIAL CONTEST ANNOUNCEMENT - THE AVENGERS

Avengers assemble! Earth's Mightiest Heroes are in need of costume overhauls!

Superhero of the Month is proud to present the Avengers as our theme for our April/May contest -- just in time for the team to make their big-screen debut!

Here's the challenge: Assume you are tasked with putting together a team of five (5) Avengers. You can choose any five you like, so long as they have been a member of the Avengers at some point in their career. (For an extensive list of Avengers members, click here.) As a team, they also need to be cohesive in their design in some way, but that interpretation is left to you. All standard guidelines apply.

Because of the amount of characters we're asking you to redesign, we're giving you an extended deadline of Sunday, May 20 by 6:00 PM MDT to complete this task. We will not be posting designs until May 1, but you are, of course, free to send in your redesigns at any point before the deadline.

Please send your team of Avengers in one (1) unified image. Failure to do so will result in your redesigns being rejected. (Consider it a lesson learned from the Birds of Prey contest. It took my time to stitch some submissions together, and while that was okay for two characters, it's not something I'm willing to do for five.) While individual shots of your team may be sent in as supplemental material, their inclusion on Superhero of the Month will be determined on a case-by-case basis. They may, however be shown on the appropriate auxiliary sites.

Two notes due to the extended deadline:

1) No extensions will be granted for this contest. With seven weeks to do your designs, there should be plenty of time, and we're anticipating we will need all the time we can get to judge these submissions.

2) During the month of April, we will be posting redesigns of any character(s) you wish to send to us. So if you have a design you've been sitting on that you're rather proud of, send it our way!

Good luck! If you have any questions, sound off in the comments below, or send us an email.

Birds of Prey Results - Part 8

This is it -- the final post in the Superhero of the Month & Girls Read Comics Birds of Prey contest! And like the final Starfire post last month, this one's a doozy -- 21 eye-popping entries! Check them out!

Lee Chen Fang's Batgirl & Black Canary
"Black Canary: A high-fashion inspired costume, rather than a trampy-looking costume that she's been wearing since the beginning.

"Batgirl: Post-injury Barbara back in action. The costume is inspired by a back brace, protecting and supporting her back as she continues fighting crime."

Edgar Binuya's Big Barda & Black Canary
"For Black Canary, I wanted to really play up the fact that she is a rider, so I referenced moto wear. This lead me to race girls which, I thought, would be a cool look for her. I went with an all leather romper with a short cut to -- of course -- show off the fishnet stockings. For Big Barda, I know I wanted her to show more skin like she does in her 'red bikini' costume; she is invulnerable, after all, and doesn't need all that armor. I had in mind scantily clad warrior females from various fantasy and sci-fi works and noticed a typical silhouette that those designs created, and used elements of her existing costume to keep her recognizable."

Josh Daniel's Black Canary & Huntress
"I pictured Black Canary with more of a 'streets' look, so I gave her a biker jacket and biker pants. I also gave her a symbol and a mask as all good heroes should. I wanted her a little more plump and muscular becuase she's more of a fighter, and also needs a big diaphragm for her voice. I never understood the origins of her sonic powers, so in this version she had her voicebox/throat/jaw replaced with cybernetics after an accident; she can do a number of different attacks, change her voice, and her jaw opens up like a snake when she yells, alleviating the problem of being gagged. She's very plain in real life, and creates this other persona by putting on contacts, a fake wig(attaches to her mask), changing her voice, and wearing a fake breasts plate made of silicone and Kevlar to protect her chest and diaphragm.

"Huntress I made tall and lanky; she's studied to be an acrobat and uses more stealth than brute force. She doesn't see the need or purpose to emphasize her sexuality, so she wears a full body suit and uses little touches like yellow eyes, fake teeth and a fake matty wig to make her look scarier, almost like a demon. She uses her heavy cloak for a scary atmosphere and to hide her bigger weapons, like her sniper crossbow. She's more into long range, using nets, grappling hooks and crossbows of various sizes to hunt and capture her enemies from afar, then gets in close to scare the crap out of them. She's also very plain in real life to hide her identity, and a little goth.

"Huntress and Black Canary are friends and partners who work well together. Canary is a short ranged fighter, while Huntress takes out foes long range. Canary flirts as the good cop while Huntress terrorizes as bad cop. But there's also a tension between the two because Dinah loves playing the persona of the Black Canary she created, while Helena has a lot of anger and hates what she has to become night after night."

SilverLocust's Batgirl & Poison Ivy
"Barbara’s not the Dark Knight. She’s had a lot happen to her, but she’s always been more about hope, and I think taking her back to the purples and yellow, as opposed to black emphasizes that. I also wanted to make the Bat symbol a part of the suit, like the suit was designed with the symbol in mind. In an animated version of Batgirl they had included a tunic/skirt versus just the pants, and I always liked it; it seemed to include a playful, less serious side to the character I always appreciated. I wanted to bring that side of Barbara out again.

"For Ivy, her clothing is a manifestation of her powers. Ivy’s naked at all times, like Mystique and the Ray. The covering of herself would be dictated by Ivy’s environment and the situations around her, much like the environment changes the appearance of a garden. In a case where she was happy, she would radiate the beauty of nature: bright colors and flowers. In a situation where she was angry or displeased I think we would see it manifested as needles and thorns -- something more dangerous and dark."

Spidophile's Batgirl & Power Girl
"My idea with Batgirl was to make her more batlike. The mask was made to look like the fangs of a bat, and the folding wings on her arms replace her cumbersome cape. The lightweight armor is purely practical, except for the helmet which sports her 'bat ears', and the clawed design on her boots mimicks the three-clawed toes of a bat. Barbara's whole color scheme is dark so as to blend in to the night, her only spots of color being her glittering eyes and hair.

"With Power Girl, I thought her costume should lean more on 'Power' than 'Girl'. I kept the original colors, because for me white in a costume shows raw power. All the holes have been removed, so instead of an awkward gap in the chest that creates an aura of inexperience and vulnerability. She's garbed in a seamless white jumpsuit that brings out her natural fierce beauty. The red shoulders give the idea of a cape. Anyone who's ever played with Glow Sticks know that when waved in the air really fast it creates the illusion of a ribbon of light -- that's the idea behind the glowing gloves and boots, achieving the same effect with her super speed."

Marta Seara's Big Barda & Black Canary
"Big Barda has a good outfit, but I think that maybe it would be a bit impractical in somemissions, so I've tried to make a lighter version, mixing her outfits and with the idea of a material that would stretch and adapt to her movements.

"Black Canary's is a gift from Oracle, leaving behind her motorcyclist uniform. I have been thinking that even if she is not affected by her canary cries, maybe it will be a good idea to give her wear headphones that will activate when she uses her meta-abilities to protect her to from going deaf in time. Her 'wings' help her jump and move between buildings."

Cookiepoppet's Power Girl & Black Canary
"I wanted to keep the essence of both the original costumes. Black Canary still has her corset, boots and jacket and Power Girl has her classic colours plus nods to her ‘window’ on her boots and gloves."

Michelle Sciuto really shot for the moon and sent in a redesign featuring each of the core Birds of Prey:

Michelle Sciuto's Black Canary & Starling

Michelle Sciuto's Lady Blackhawk & Manhunter

Michelle Sciuto's Oracle & Misfit

Michelle Sciuto's Power Girl & Huntress
Editor's Note: Michelle didn't leave any thoughts on her designs.

Rory's Batgirl & Black Canary
"I re-imagined Birds of Prey as a 'Vigilante Scooter Club': Tough and sporty roller derby-type girls with DIY costumes that are functional, but also fashionable enough for Gotham's trendiest dive bars. For a smart, design-conscious woman like Barbara Gordon, a utility belt just isn't very stylish. Instead she has a more functional and fashionable messenger bag, with plenty of room for a Bat-laptop, Bat-tazer, Bat-tonfa, and any other Bat-device the plot might require, and her scooter is festooned with a variety of high tech electronics. Black Canary plays Punk to Batgirl's Mod; the fishnets are more about attitude than sexuality. An experienced and dangerous street-fighter, she isn't afraid to use brass-knuckles or kubotan to keep the odds in her favor, and boxing wraps help keep her knuckles protected from even the hardest skulls. These two might not see eye to eye on technology and fashion, but they do agree, jump-boots are excellent for kicking you in the face. These characters are smart, strong and empowered, I wanted the design and style to reflect that. Also, Birds of Prey, like every 'Vigilante Scooter Club', needs a logo/patch for their jacket, Black Canary shows it off in a bonus image."

Kale Frost's Huntress & Oracle
"Huntress: The take on Helena's origin I've always liked most is that she is the daughter of a Mob Boss and a devout catholic (to the point she almost became a nun), and has her fair share of catholic guilt. In the end though, she choose not to become a nun, rather she donned the spandex to fight crime and to try steer her family straight. She's a brawler and a weapons expert, she needs protection, not a strangely exposed stomach and a mask that suitably conceals her identity. It's the kind of fertile ground that leads to great storytelling; not everyone should have Batman's origin right?

"Oracle: Before the Joker left Barbara in a coma with a broken spine, she was in peak physical condition and fought crime as Batgirl, so it makes sense that she would want to return to that former health. She's also a geek and a master strategist, at least on par with Batman, but with too much compassion to use his extreme methods. So in a world full of super technology, it only makes sense she would seek to heal her body. The exo-skeleton she wears is more than just a frame for a highly advanced computer and a range of clever tech devices, it is slowly repairing the damage to her body. However, there are limits to how long she can wear it, so she stills spends some time with either crutches or in a wheelchair."

Jorell Rivera's Black Canary & Vixen
"I looked to traditional superhero design, as well as contemporary women's fashion for Canary and Vixen's new looks. I gave them both masks and capes just because I've always liked that visual aspect of superhero design, and I wanted blend the over the top elements of that genre with more down to earth fashion. For Canary, I really wanted to emphasize the bird aspect of her character, so I put feathers all over her face and body as I thought that would look cool. Her cape can also double as armor for when she gets into really nasty battles. For the color scheme, I've always liked the blue/black she's had for most of her time in comics, so I kept to that, with some yellow added for contrast.  I also thought her dark colors would contrast nicely with Vixen's brighter design. Speaking of Vixen, I moved away from the skintight look she's had for awhile and looked to modern African fashion (with a little Silk Spectre thrown in) to create something loose and stylish for her to wear. I liked the color scheme Vixen had before, so I kept that to maintain a little continuity between designs."

Thomas Crielly's Huntress & Power Girl
"I've always found the Huntress costumes to be overly fussy and bulky so i decided to simplify and streamline her look; I also decided to give her tech goggles (which would include H.U.D., night vision, infrared etc.) rather than a mask. The stylised H on her chest carries back over her shoulder to become the cape. I always loved the main Power Girl costume so didn't want to stray too far from that. I kept the colour scheme and decided to play with the fashion aspect of it and give her some clothing that could relate back to her alien origin, whilst trying to keep it superheroish, rather than techie and futuristic, hence the gloves, scarf/shawl/cape and skirt that you wouldn't really get on 'Earth' superheroes."

Jamie Rimmer's Huntress & Big Barda
"Huntress: I like the conflict of this character; religious, yet also sticking to her own moral code, unafraid to get her hands dirty. Her story reminds me somewhat of the fabled Knights Templar, killing in the name of God, so I wanted to bring this in a little with the design. I got rid of the cape in an effort to tie more into religious symbology -- the gown, the crosses -- whilst attempting to give her a modern look.

"Big Barda: One of the most awesome (and underused) Dx characters IMHO. I wanted to make her design much like her -- bold and strong. I made her tall and hopefully powerful, with a hint of a cheeky smirk. I always lied Kirby's use of the primary colours and simple patterns, so this costume is more than an homage to the legend himself."

Ganknott's Black Canary & Huntress
"Canary's redesign combines elements from her original iconic costume and her more modern combat suit. No fishnets, but rather a mesh pattern on her gloves/boots. She is also carrying a small leather jacket for when she needs it. I picture Canary as a more enthusiastic, swashbuckling kind of hero, and tried to throw in a little fun into her design. I designed Huntress to come across as more chilling and threatening. Ominous cloak, darker colours and sleek, yet powerful boots and gloves. In a throwback to her Catholic origins, she gets a nun-like hood instead of her pointy mask."

Barry Prioste's Batgirl & Black Canary
"I had two main things in my mind when creating this version of the characters: Keep them younger -- around late-teens-to-early-twenties (sort of a Birds of Prey: Year One), and to emphasis the team aspect by unifying their costume designs."

Ross Radke's Oracle & Big Barda
"I wanted to draw the two biggest extremes -- Oracle, the thinker, and Big Barda, the bruiser. It was a fun challenge to streamline Barda's garish costume a bit, she's one of my favorite DC characters as far as appearances go."

David Karrow's Hawkgirl & Lady Blackhawk
"When I think of the Birds of Prey, I think about a group of strong, independent, warrior women who command respect, and personally, I find it more realistic to portray them without showing off every inch of skin possible. These two are some of my favorite Birds, and I like the idea of teams having uniforms, but the birds have never done that, and it wouldn't fit them to do that. That said, I chose to make their uniforms similar without being all matchy-matchy. When I was looking up Lady Blackhawk, I found that she was well trained in all sorts of combat and weaponry so I ran with that: WEAPONS, WEAPONS ,WEAPONS! With Hawkgirl, I have always liked her colors, but I thought a little armored breast plate and goggles vs. a giant weirdo headdress...I went with goggles."

Editor's Note: David's image is HUGE, so please click on it to get all the detail possible!

Andy Bennett's Black Canary & Huntress
"Black Canary: I don't think that Canary's signature is so much her fishnets, there have been a few variations of her costume without them. I think it's her legs, and I decided to accessorise them in some really long socks. I made the top of her costume a single piece, rather than a corset and jacket; I wanted to merge the two. Whilst leather is still awesome, I wanted to add some texture to her outfit with the sleeves being quilted.

"Huntress: I've never really been a fan of Huntress's costume. It never seemed to fit her namesake or history. I, for one, was quite happy that the New 52 reboot was going back to Huntress's roots and following Helena Wayne, though, when I saw the costume, I couldn't help but think it was a wasted opportunity. She's the daughter of Batman and Catwoman, for crying out loud. I decided to give her a Catwoman cat suit, loosing the cape and decreasing the size of her mask. Both were ridiculously big. I tried to bring aspects of her original design into this simpler version: The white cross, hints of purple and a sexy flash of flesh. I also gave her the Adam Hughes Catwoman pixie cut."

There you have it! Lots of great stuff in here; it's going to be another tough time for the judges!

Let us know what you think in the comments below! Check out all of the Birds of Prey submissions we've run over the course of the month, and stay tuned for our next contest announcement in the coming days, and the announcement of this month's winner on March 31!

Editor's Note: I was mobile most of the day and was excited to see the Superhero of the Month mailbox fill up as I was out and about. I've tried to post this in a timely manner after the deadline, but if there's anything I've missed -- in this or any post -- please shoot me a message and let me know. Sometimes in getting posts up, details slip through the cracks, and I'd like to ensure everyone is happy. Thanks! -- AG

Birds of Prey Results - Part 7

Our penultimate post in the Superhero of the Month & Girls Read Comics Birds of Prey contest is loaded with pairings of Barbara Gordon and her allies. Check them out!

Dane Cypel's Power Girl & Batgirl
This piece was a challenge to redesign one of the several characters featured in Birds of Prey. I chose Power Girl and Batgirl. I've always wanted to draw Power Girl and not make her ridiculously chest-heavy. Then again, I didn't want to reinvent the wheel. Both of these characters are iconic and have very distinct looks. I decided to remove the cape from Power Girl and give her something different, some sort of sash-belt thing. Other than that I wanted to retain her essentially normal look while also making her appear like a power-house. Batgirl I wanted to change up. I wanted to give her a new color scheme and really emphasize that she was (is still?) the Oracle. Though this tech-savvy aspect of her is done through wrist-mounted computers and 3D displays where she can send and receive information on the fly.

Olly Woodman's Batgirl & Big Barda
"Batgirl: Personally, I prefer her as Oracle, so I thought about a way of having the best of both. It always seemed like a no-brainer that WayneTech would have remote controlled automatons that could 'go missing' and that Bruce, Babs and Alfred could kit it out for Babs to use, much like Bruce uses in Kingdom Come. I used Batgirl's colour scheme from the 60s Batman show, as it sets her apart from other Bat-characters.

"Barda: The New Gods are some of Kirby's best designs in my opinion so all I really did was simplify Barda's costume, keeping the bold, colourful shapes that denotes Kirby and add some warrior touches. The shoulder armour is more to give her a military vibe than for actual protection as I really don't think Barda needs armour. The most controversial choice is the mohawk; I don't see Barda as someone who cares about her hair too much so I wanted it to reflect her rebellious, warrior spirit: half punk / half Mohican. Her cosmic rod would be like a cross between and Green Lantern power ring and a lightsaber; making whatever hand-held energy weapon she desired."

Shang Protum's Black Canary & Huntress
"I've always found Black Canary's name underrepresented in her costume, so there's a fair amount of yellow in here. Her cape could be stiff and made of a thick polymer, designed to protect her from surprise attacks from the back. Huntress is a biker chick with a bad attitude, and here's a slightly more realistic take on her costume. I've always preferred her using bludgeoning weapons -- they seem to suit her character more than the crossbow."

Jamie Rimmer's Power Girl & Oracle
"Power Girl: I wanted to retool Karens most familiar look and make it a bit sleeker, and give her her own identifying symbol. The power symbol is something that has appeared intermittently on Peej's costume, but is often forgotten in favour of the more familiar -- and apparently iconic -- boob window. The  window is a bit of a tricky thing for me, as its not something that has made sense in tailoring terms. I decided to create the illusion here of the familiar window by having a cropped coat teamed with a bodice/one piece bathing suit-style uniform that shows the breasts, without being so in your face. The baggy material on the sleeves, coupled with big gloves and boots, act as a balance and help tone down the window. I've often thought Karen's costume has some military style aspects to it, so I attempted to incorporate this here, making the cape a more practical coat.

"Oracle: One of the greatest disservices of the rebooted DCU for me is the retooling of Barbara. The character has somewhat devolved from premiere information broker for the entire superhero community to a former sidekick who was shot, but got better. By wiping out this part of the character, I feel DC has taken a major misstep. I thought, why can't she be both Batgirl and Oracle? Not just a mere sidekick, but a strong woman who, despite everything she has been through, is a respected and important member of the superhero community?

"The exoskeleton serves as a reminder of where Barbara came from and helps to boost muscle capacity, and take some of the strain away from newly cured legs. It also ties into the Oracle identity, with the tech heavy aspects. I thought the costume would be creepy and unique, somewhat faceless and shrouded in mystery.   Technology is a massive part of the character, and should not be ignored. The VR screens act as both an intimidation/distraction for enemies, and also are very useful for hacking/projecting on-the-go. This is a Batgirl for a modern age, Oracle for a new DC -- embracing change, but becoming more than she was, rather than less."

Aamina's Oracle & Misfit
"For Oracle, I went with Grant Morrison's concept from Batman: Leviathan Strikes, where he presented Oracle as an online avatar, and mixed it other concepts. The idea behind revamping her as an avatar is to give Barbara a form of mobility and watch her perform 'in the field', while maintaining her Oracle persona. I kept the sleek black look, but instead of using yellow I went with green because the yellow and black theme gave a Batgirl vibe. I took the idea of adding green circuitry to her costume from when she was infected with Brainiac's virus in order to play up on the idea that Oracle is a computer program. I also replaced the cape with thruster boots, like the ones in Terry's Batsuit, for a more futuristic feel. I kept the helmet from the original design, but I tweaked it just a bit, and removed the flame-like hair. I opted out of using the Bat symbol, instead going with the bat-themed helmet, because Oracle is Barbara's own creation.
"For Misfit, I felt that she had been underplayed by the writers. In my mind Barbara would never let Charlotte patrol without protective gear, so I gave her a full body suit and boots rather than her normal outfit. Misfit strikes me as more of traditionalist when it comes to costumes, so I kept the cape and placed her "M" crest of her chest while keeping it simple. I kept her mask design relatively the same, but I added lenses to in order to hide her identity. I also added elbow and knee pads for protection and as a echo of her future Huntress suit. I stayed with a lighter color palette because Misfit is a happy, optimistic girl, in spite of the obstacles she has faced."

What do you think? As always, there's some great stuff in there, so let us know what you think in the comments below!

Birds of Prey submissions are due this Saturday by 10:00 PM MDT, so please get them in to us as soon as possible. Check out the Official Contest Announcement for details! You can also check out all of the submissions we've received so far by clicking here.

Birds of Prey Results - Part 6

It's the last week of Superhero of the Month and Girls Read Comics' Birds of Prey contest! Check out the newest entries right here!

Jennie Whitwood's Huntress & Black Canary, Lady Blackhawk & Oracle
"For me, the Birds of Prey team is always the core of Oracle, Huntress, Black Canary and Lady Blackhawk, so I couldn't restrict myself to just two of them! I've always loved the retro styling of Zinda but I felt that her skirt may cause issues with her abilities to kick butt, so I started thinking about a variation on this outfit. I wanted to play a little with the retro/vintage vibe and give the team some subtle costume changes that would compliment this while making it clear they are a team. Oracle was particularly fun to draw as you don't often get to see her dressed up and I thought it would be perfect to give her that famous 50's-style up-do that suits red heads so well!"

Editor's Note: While one image, Jennie's entry is being considered as two separate submissions: Huntress & Black Canary as one, and Lady Blackhawk & Oracle as the other.

Edgar Binuya's Huntress & Power Girl

"I really played it safe here and kept the designs traditional and recognizable. I brainstormed for awhile but ended up with designs that, I think, would actually see print. Huntress sports a hood and protective goggles that also provide a wide variety of visual enhancements. Power Girl's ornamentation is a play on the Kryptonian symbol for the letter 'P'."

Alex Melchor's Huntress & Lady Blackhawk

"I wanted to give Huntress a more urban warrior look; replacing the cumbersome cape with a heavy, padded hoodie that also looks like a Crusader tabard on purpose, to highlight her Catholic roots as well as her fight against crime. Gone are the hand-crossbows, which are a rather lousy weapon for a close-range combatant as they still take two hands to load and have little stopping power. Instead, I gave her an actual crossbow for long range attacks, and for a close ranged weapon, I gave her a wrist-mounted slingshot. She keeps trick pellets in small canisters in her belt, which includes metal for near-lethal force, flashbangs, rubber, smoke, etc.

"Lady Blackhawk's costume always kind of bugged, so here I have her wearing the outfit of an actual WWII bomber pilot, but customized for her teasing and playful personality. She doesn't need much protection as she doesn't engage in physical combat as much as other Birds, so she's free to show as much skin as she likes."

Mario Daniel's Big Barda & Huntress

"Huntress: I've aligned her more with the Bat Family in her look. The 'Naughty Nun' thing I never cared for. So this Huntress is more TDK, utilitarian and sleek. She wears armor that protects the vital organs while allowing flexibility. The cape is more a tunic and scalloped in the Bat style. Gauntlets with the distinctive scalloped spikes and no more pouches' Huntress uses a magnetic waist and thigh belt, ala TDK. Her mask is the only hold over from her original design, but with a tweak. It's protective eyewear instead of an actual mask. Overall I hope it conveys a sense of wanting and receiving true acceptance in the Bat-family while being her own hero.

"Barda: I've tried to combine her two most iconic costumes: the wacky Kirby New Gods armor -- specifically the helmet -- and the groovy "Bikini" look. Essentially, it's a lightly armored swimsuit. Barda could do with a bit for sexiness while keeping the warrior feel."

Birds of Prey Results - Part 5 [Updated]

Submissions keep coming in for the Superhero of the Month & Girls Read Comics Birds of Prey contest! Here are a couple more we've received lately:

Robert Parham's Black Canary & Huntress
"The key to the Birds of Prey is that they are rugged women who will do what nobody else can, so it was this that I kept in mind when designing them. Black Canary has always struck me as a trashy dresser with those fishnets and leather jacket, so I took that as my starting point and made her the type of woman who'd be at home in a rough nightclub. I kept leather as her main texture, but moved the fishnet onto her back and forearms, covering her up her legs while echoing traditional martial arts arm strapping. I cut her hair short so that it won't get in the way in a fight. The Huntress is a brawler, so I gave her tough leather padding and got rid of her exposed hair and her cape, which would be a target in battle. I covered her mouth with black cloth to emphasize her ninja-like stealth, and mounted her trademark crossbow on her arm so that it can't be wrestled from her. Her harness-like styling mirrors her traditional crucifix motif, while also suggesting a tough, S+M look."

Matthew Ray's Black Canary & Poison Ivy
"Canary's redesign is an homage to the past. I wanted to reintroduce her choker (which back in the old days could mimic her cry), and I wanted to reference that Dinah of yesteryear had black hair and wore a blonde wig. I decided to go with both and gave her blonde hair in the front. Poison Ivy's look owes itself more to form fitting moss or lichen embellished w/ a swirling leaf design. I felt she would definitely want to keep in contact w/ the ground so she is sans shoes."

[Update]

We keep picking up new submissions shortly after the original posts go up left and right this month! (Which is totally fine, bytheway.) Here's another great submission!

Lemurtree's Power Girl & Batgirl
"My aim with Power Girl was to make her look weak and vulnerable, which of course she is not. Since her strength and invulnerability come as a birthright, I think it's more interesting if she's not covered in muscles. I also tried to give the silly peep-hole in the front of her costume a purpose; it's now a void that's also an echo of her kinship to Superman.

"The Batgirl outfit is a feminised version of the suit I designed for Batman back in October. I also wanted the contrast of her looking cocky and confident next to Power Girl, even though despite her armour she is much more fragile."

Birds of Prey Results - Part 4 [Updated 2x]

More great submissions keep coming in for the Girls Read Comics & Superhero of the Month Birds of Prey contest. Check out the latest batch of entries:

MtReuil's Power Girl & Huntress
"I kinda took some inspiration from Grant Morrison’s 'jeans and a t-shirt' Superman relaunch to do a more casual, less polished Power Girl. I played up the Catholic aspect of Huntress to contrast with Power Girl in style (as well as build). I don’t think this is necessarily a version of Helena Bertinelli that is actually a nun, maybe just one who uses the trappings to get an advantage over criminals who wouldn’t stoop so far as to hit one."

SilverLocust's Lady Blackhawk & Big Barda
"Lady Blackhawk: I wanted to update her but keep in mind her history. Lady Blackhawk is from World War II and pretty much a time lost hero. She is from a time period where she, had to save the Blackhawk team not once but twice to become an honorary member of their team. She worked hard for the right to wear the uniform, so I thought the look needed to maintain the Blackhawk feel, more of an update of the old uniforms. I even included the original Blackhawk’s symbol versus the current version because I thought it would mean more to her as a character.

"For me, Barda is a total representation of Kirby’s work. Even over 40 years after her creation, Barda’s costume has remained very close to the original. I went back and looked at Kirby’s sketches of the New Gods and his illustrations for Julius Caesar from the same period and tried to incorporate a feel of his style into Barda. I stayed with her bright colors because Barda isn’t the type to stay in shadows, she doesn’t need to be dark or sinister to be scary."

Thomas Fummo's Misfit & Oracle
"Misfit: Tried a more serious but still slightly fun-loving approach. I love the idea of a super-powered fan-girl, and decided to incorporate various of her fellow Birds' costume elements into Charlie's costume, as a kind of tribute to them.

"Oracle: Or rather, an 'Oracle-bot'. This interpretation of Barbara Gordon still oversees things from afar, but also likes to intervene virtually via a cerebral link to her own robot, who can provide on-field support to her fellow Birds during a fight or investigation."

[Update]

Comickergirl's Batgirl & Black Canary
"Batgirl: For Babs, I basically started with the idea that I wanted to blend her Oracle identity with her Batgirl identity. So I changed up the color scheme a bit, and added some circuitry, as well as added lenses to her mask, to mimic her glasses.

"Black Canary: I began with a simpler idea: PANTS. Yep, ditched the fishnets and opted for some pants, as they are decidedly warmer and perhaps a bit more comfortable when riding a motorcycle. Aside from that, I tried to remain reasonably close to the original outfit, keeping the jacket, but opting for a more 'blue' color scheme, as a nod to the original Black Canary costume."

[Update 2]

Johansi's Black Canary & Huntress
"For Black Canary I wanted to make her look more sleek, and have her outfit be really dark, almost a couple a shades away from being fully black rather than the usual shiny PVC suit. And zippers. Lots of zippers. The hood is attached to to the suit and the zippers do not unzip the suit. The zipper that opens the suit is hidden in the middle of it.

"For Huntress I wanted to lighten her up, suit wise, and make her darker, color-wise. I always felt her suit was so bulky, and heavy with all those weapons, and pouches. I also made her cape way smaller. I always felt like she never needed a cape anyways but she always had one so I just gave it to her. I just wanted them to look ten times more kick-a** than they already do."
