Aamina's Blackfire

I thought we were done, but then Aamina sent in this great Blackfire concept. Check it out!

Aamina
"Not really a complete redesign, but more of a mix between different outfits Blackfire's worn over the years."

I think it works great! What do you think? Let us know in the comments below!

Send in your Avengers redesigns soon! They are due May 20, so be sure to check out all the pertinent information here!

Johansi's (Extra) Birds of Prey

Johansi scored second place in last month's Birds of Prey contest, and in his email with these pieces noted that he still had "Birds of Prey fever". I, for one, am glad, because these are fantastic:

Starling

Lady Blackhawk
Pretty great work, eh? That Starling in particular is fantastic, in my opinion. But what do you all think? Let us know in the comments below!

This marks the end of April's free-for-all of redesigns. Avengers redesigns will start going up in a couple of days, and will continue until the deadline, May 20. There's still plenty of time to get your designs in for the contest, so be sure to get the details on the Avengers contest by clicking here.

Craig Payne's Black Canary

Craig Payne has sent in some of my favorite redesigns in the past, so I was excited when his email popped up with a redesign for April.

Craig Payne
Craig intended this to be one half of the Birds of Prey contest, but ran out of time before the contest deadline. We're certainly glad he sent it in, though, because this is pretty cool!

Omar I. Landeros' Starfire

The last piece from Omar I. Landeros! A huge round of applause for sending in so many great pieces throughout the month!

Omar I. Landeros
"I wanted to draw a warrior feline woman who looked more warrior feline, rather than a walking felony."

Omar I. Landeros' War Machine

The penultimate April redesign from Omar I. Landeros!

Omar I. Landeros
"This is what I think of when I think of War Machine. I think hulking metal war instrument not silver/black Ironman 2.0."

Omar I. Landeros' Grendel

More from Omar I. Landeros!

Omar I. Landeros
"I was thinking of Grendel as a female and that's what I came up with."

Omar I. Landeros' Masked Claw

Omar I. Landeros' rain of redesigns continues!

Omar I. Landeros
"This is another obscure character, this time from the Mignolaverse. I loved the idea though."

Omar I. Landeros' Hooded Justice

We've made it to the end of April! Before we start with Avengers redesigns, we have a bunch of non-contest redesigns, with a handful from Omar I. Landeros! Here's the first to kick off the day:

Omar I. Landeros
"I know he's a real obscure character, but I've always liked him and wanted to update his costume while keeping the essence true. Only minor tweaks were needed since Gibbons is such as amazing artist."

Sebastian von Buchwald's Supergirl

Supergirl is one of my favorite characters. I'm not an avid fan of her books, but she does exude a sense of cheerfulness that is missing from a lot of comics. So when last month's Birds of Prey winner, Sebastian von Buchwald sent this in, it was almost as if he invited me to do this:

Sebastian von Buchwald
"It’s really more of a 'young' Supergirl than a 'redesigned' Supergirl but that’s what I was aiming for. There are a couple of tweaks here and there but it is, for all intents and purposes, a classic Supergirl costume."

Awesome, no?

Let us know what you think in the comments below, and stay tuned for more redesigns as we approach the end of the month.

Thomas Fummo's Spider-Man - Take 2!

Thomas Fummo has been sending in great redesigns for the last few months, and has sent in a few already for "anything goes" April. With the month almost at a close, we've got one more from him -- another take on the Amazing Spider-Man!

Thomas Fummo
"I'm always going for realism here. So much so, that this isn't just spidey redesigned... he's also re-imagined. Mainly, his power-set is different. I remembered some research I did three years ago for my high school thesis on the science, philsophy and history of superheroes, and an article on what abilities a human would really have if merged with a spider. No sign of super-strength, speed or agility, but rather:

  • Organic webs
  • Surface adhesion (for short periods of time)
  • Hightened senses/awareness (not precognition)
  • Extreme durability (ability to withstand punishment and survive for prolonged periods without oxygen, water or food)
  • Superhuman jumps (several times their own height)
"I figured even just a couple of these more plausible powers were enough for a descent spider-man.
So, gone are the web-shooter, and included are a lot more gadgets and gizmos to make up for what Pete would lack in brawn (I'm thinking gas pellets, tasers, that sort of thing). The logo is purposefully segmented to emphasise the Spider/Man element of the character (a human figure with two extra pairs of legs). The black and white come from the common jumping spider's colours."

Wendy-Self's Starfire

Back in February, our Starfire contest was a huge success, drawing in record entries at the time. Unfortunately, some people didn't have time to complete their submissions then, but we're happily presenting one of them now:

Wendy-Self
"I liked the idea of giving the character a tribal theme and I tried to play up the more cat-like features of the Tamaranean race. I tried to keep some of the key character traits from the original design like the purple of the costume, red jewels and big red hair but at the same time I tried to make it look unique. I especially loved drawing the tattoos/markings on her skin, the thought being that her people would absorb solar rays through these markings, like solar panels, which she then channels into her starbolts."

Sometimes I get bummed when we get pieces that never made it to the original contests, because they very likely could have been tough contenders. I have a feeling that Wendy's piece would have done well.

Let us know what you think in the comments below, and stay tuned for more redesigns as we approach the end of the month.

Omar I. Landeros' X-23

Last week, Omar Landeros sent in his redesign of the Martian Manhunter, and this week follows up with his take on X-23. Evidently, it wasn't finished for our contest at the time, but we're happy to share it with you now:

Omar Landeros
"I love X-23 it just sucks that she's never had any real costume; they all kinda come and go. For this one I was trying to keep her mid drift thing shes always got going on, yet make her costume streamlined and functional for the assassin she's supposed to be, as well as give her costume a nod to her 'dear old pops'."

Let us know what you think in the comments below, and stay tuned for more redesigns as we approach the end of the month.

Pharoah Bolding's Wonder Woman

Pharoah Bolding was one of the few who submitted to our War Machine contest, so it was great to see him come back with a new take on Wonder Woman.

Pharoah Bolding's Wonder Woman
"Her armor is influenced by the Greek warriors, from head to toe. I researched legitimate Greek armor and weaponry, making sure to stay away from the ridiculousness that is things like the over-the-top film 300. I focused on the way the armor plating was done for Greek warrior torsos and footwear as well as how their sword sheathes were affixed to said armor. I then made sure to incorporate classic Wonder Woman symbols and iconography - wrist bracelets, the familiar ‘eagle’ W, the stars, the Lasso of Truth - while putting together the armor. The result ended up being very nice in my opinion, giving the Greek armor a nice embellishment while staying true to both Greek warrior appearance and Diana’s Amazonian warrior background.

"For weaponry I, of course, utilized Wonder Woman’s Lasso of Truth, But I need a melee weapon for hand-to-hand combat. This is where the Greek Kopis came into play. It looks cool, really has that hack-and-slash effect, and really fit the 'no nonsense' vibe I was going for.

"I finished Diana off by making sure she looked dangerous and battle-ready, adding some scarring and wear and tear to her skin while ensuring she looked like she was ready for battle!"

What do you all think? Let us know in the comments below, and stay tuned for more redesigns as the month comes to a close.

Brian Post's Cobra Commander

Brian Post has sent us some fantastic redesigns in the past, so it was great to see him shoot us something for April's "anything goes" break before Avengers posts start going up:

Brian Post's Cobra Commander
"I grew up watching the 80's cartoon, and G.I. Joe is near and dear to me. My redesign would be for a new G.I. Joe cartoon. Streamlined. Prideful. Arrogant. Smart. These are the qualities I wanted to take into account on this design. Watermark of the cobra placed on the top of his helmet/mask is to remind everyone that he is the brains of the operation. Sash and cape to show his flair for the dramatic. Dark color scheme because he is, of course, the bad guy."

Cody Walker's Goku

Earlier in the month, we posted Cody Walker's Riddler redesign. At the same time, he sent in a redesign of Goku that we held off on since the two designs were unrelated, but are proud to present now:

Goku

"With Goku, my goal was to bring the character into the modern day while at the same time keeping true to the character. The design throws away the martial arts clothing of the series in favor of something more... street. Instead of sweat bands I substituted tape and instead of a monkey tail I switched it for a brown rag."

Alex Smith's Harley Quinn

Harley Quinn is, without a doubt, one of my favorite characters in the DCU. She's so delightfully demented, so I enjoy seeing different artists take a stab at her. So you can imagine my excitement when this amazing rendition by Alex Smith came our way:

Alex Smith's Harley Quinn
"I went at this from the stand-point that for some reason I had no choice and it had to be done. Let's be honest, her classic costume needs no update. I wanted to keep elements of the classic costume, keep it practical and make it look like she'd be able to move in it. I went with the glasses to give her a smart, sexy doctor kind of look and combined it with a cool punk hairstyle that is sort of shaped like her old cowl. I kept the belt and pouches, cuz a girl needs a place to keep all her laughing gas and exploding cigars. It's meant to be functional and sexy without being blatantly slutty or sexist."

This is such a happy medium between classic Harley and Arkham Harley who, while I loved, definitely played up the sexy factor. If Harley's costume had to change for the New 52, it should have been something like this, not the ridiculous outfit she now wears.

Thomas Fummo's 1930's Batman & Robin

While we usually receive redesigns of characters that look like they could step into comics right now, we occasionally pick up reinterpretations of characters, like this one from Thomas Fummo, who re-imagines the costumes of the Dynamic Duo from the 1930's - 1940's:

Thomas Fummo
"The main thought behind both was to incorporate more of a pulpy feel to the design, including visual references to Zorro, Lone Ranger and Dracula. Despite these flairs I wanted the outfits to still look practical and comfortable and I also tried to make the logos a tad more detailed (as well as zoologically correct). Finally I removed the ears from Batman's cowl, which I know is a bold step, but I wanted to experiment with other ways in which Bruce could achieve the iconic bat-shadow he casts with the outline of the suit and cape, without adding ears to the actual mask. I think the high collar would work in a similar way, as well as making him look less like a devil and more gothic swashbuckler. I removed the green from Robin's costume, using the Tim Drake Robin palet which I have always preferred when put alongside Batman's black and grey."

It's pretty creative, don't you think? Share your thoughts in the comments below, and stay tuned for more redesigns as the month closes.

Tory Cunningham's Stargirl

One of my favorite things about periodically running "anything goes" redesigns is that we pick up versions of characters that I think I'd never think of. Case in point: Tory Cunningham's Stargirl:

Tory Cunningham
Tory didn't leave any thoughts on his piece, but this is a fun redesign of a character badly in need of one in the old DCU. The star insignia on the upper half of the body is particularly inspired.

Omar I. Landeros's Martian Manhunter

Omar I. Landeros has sent in some very fun stuff in the past, and his submission for April's free-for-all is no exception. Check out his take on the Martian Manhunter:

Martian Manhunter
"I was going for something with more space sense than the suspenders and swim shorts."

Mission accomplished. But what do you think? Let us know in the comments below, and stay tuned for more redesigns as the month presses on.

Jorell Rivera's Invincible

Our Atom Eve and Project: Rooftop's Invincible contests turned out a lot of fantastic redesigns of some of Image Comics' most recognizable superheroes, and this piece by Jorell Rivera goes to show that great interpretations of the Invincible family just keep coming.

Jorell Rivera
"I had a couple of ideas: One, I wanted to make him look like more of a superhero, because why not. These are superhero comics; why can't someone wear a cape and their underwear on the outside while fighting fifty foot robot monkeys? (I may have been dealing with some of my anger over the new costumes for many DC heroes, including Superman, with this design) Two, since he's apparently always getting the snot kicked out of him (he had his intestines ripped out during one battle) I thought it would be good for Invincible to have some armor. But I wanted that armor to look kind of futuristic and sleek as well. Don't ask me how it all stays on his body. It's just alien magic science."

David Karrow's Black Cat

David Karrow's Hawkgirl and Lady Blackhawk from last month was one of my favorites, so I was excited when he sent us this Black Cat to run this month:

Black Cat
Evidently, this was a piece for our official Black Cat contest back in January of 2011 that never made it out of the blue line stage until recently. I'm glad it did, though, because Black Cat is one of my favorites over at Marvel, and it's always fun to see new takes on her.

Warren Newsom's Wonder Woman International

Warren Newsom's been sending us stuff since the very beginning, so it's always exciting to see what someone so dedicated has come up with. Here's his take on a counterpart to Batman, Inc.:
Clockwise from top center:  Diana, Cassie, Artemis, Akili, Achilles, Donna.
"These are some drawings I did a while back when Batman, Incorporated came out.  I thought that it would make sense for Wonder Woman to form her own corporation through which to help the people of the world.  So, here you have Wonder Woman International."

Thomas Fummo's Spider-Man & Green Goblin

The Amazing Spider-Man is aiming to take a more realistic approach to the titular hero and his world. Well, as realistic as you can get with genetically altered spiders and men turning into lizards. But the realistic approach was also one artist Thomas Fummo had in mind when he sent us these:

Michael Lunsford's X-Men

There's a very good chance you saw these over on Project: Rooftop, but before then, I saw them on Twitter, and asked Michael if we could run his designs here, with a positive response.

Michael Lunsford's X-Men
The X-Men are tough, because so many have had iconic looks in the past, but these are fantastic takes on the characters the look modern, while respectfully honor the designs that have come before them.

Check out the full article for larger, individual shots!

Cody Walker's Riddler

With everything being fair game for the month of April, we've received a lot of great, inventive redesigns so far. Artist Cody Walker steps up to the plate in today's installment with his take on the Riddler:

Cody Walker
"Riddler's costume is sort of hard to redesign beyond the suit or the unitard. So, what I went about doing was adding my own personal style to the design. This is a Riddler who is a bit more lazy with his looks. My version of the Riddler doesn't wear a mask because he feels he's too cocky to actually get caught. I also decided to throw out the massive amount of question marks that typically appear in regular Riddler designs and settled on just one question mark on his shirt as if it were a graphic tee he randomly picked up."

What do you all think? Let us know in the comments below, and stay tuned for more redesigns as the month presses on.

Dean T. Fraser's Sinestro Corps Harley

If you've never checked out Dean T. Fraser's Springfield Punx, you're really doing yourself a disservice. The premise is taking comic book and other pop culture figures and spinning them in a Simpson's style, and the results are always awesome. Take, for example, this:
Dean T. Fraser's Sinestro Corps Harley Quinn
While it's not a stark deviation of the classic Harley costume, the little changes certainly are fun, and give Harley an even more sinister flare.

Matthew Ray's Huntress & Batgirl

Matthew Ray sent us a submission for the Birds of Prey contest and, after some feedback on the original, decided to tweak his design a little:

Matthew Ray's Huntress & Batgirl
"The main impetus in redoing my original rendering is Batgirl's 'crotchbat', and Huntress' face; I thought that her jaw was wonky, at best. The additional changes to Batgirl's mask stem from an effort to further differentiate her from Batwoman. The shorter cape is a nod to longer capes being more of a liability in a fight."

What do you all think? Let us know in the comments below, and stay tuned for more redesigns as the month presses on.

Johansi's Emma Frost

With results for the Avengers contest on hiatus until May 1, we're running redesigns of any character for the duration of April. This lovely Emma Frost kicks things off to a great start:

Johansi
Johansi has sent in some fantastic redesigns to our Wonder Woman, Starfire and Birds of Prey contests, and was kind enough to let us run his take on the X-Men's Emma Frost to our site. Roughly based around the Frank Quietly redesign, this version retains the "high collar trench coat and...super high platform shoes", but changes things up a bit by "[modifying] her jacket, top and pants" into a progression of Quietly's design.

The "X" on the jacket is a great way to incorporate the team logo, and is continuous with how the logo has been integrated into Emma's uniform before. This design looks like she could walk into an X-Men title right now.

What do you all think? Let us know in the comments below, and stay tuned for more redesigns through the month.
